  • Verse I

    Open Access•Michael Wachtel•CHAPTER•New Cambridge History of Russian…•2024

This chapter traces the development of Russian poetry from the earliest known texts to the late nineteenth century. The emphasis is on versification (syllabic, syllabo-tonic, and tonic [also called accentual] systems, all of which appear at times in Russia), genre, and style. Examples come primarily from the work of canonic poets. A distinction is drawn between folkloric and literary verse, which intersected only infrequently. Some attention is d…

  • Charts, Graphs, and Meaning

Michael Wachtel•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2015

The present paper reviews a classic work of scholarship on Russian verse, Kiril Taranovsky’s Russian Binary Meters. The analysis demonstrates that the two sections of the book are tacitly at odds with each other, and that the more famous second part (on “regressive accentual dissimilation,” and more generally the evolution of rhythmic patterning in various meters) does not fully take into account the observations of the first part (on accentuatio…

  • Writing as Exorcism

Michael Wachtel, Ilya Kutik•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2006

This interpretive essay brings a poetic sensibility to bear on the lives and works of three major Russian writers. It is Ilya Kutik's contention that many writers are tormented by secret fears and desires that only writing - in particular, the use of certain words and images - can exorcise. Making this biographical approach peculiarly his own - and susceptible to the nuances of comedy, tragedy and critical equanimity - Kutik reads works of Alexan…
