  • Metaphorizing as Embodied Interactivity: What Gesturing and Film Viewing Can Tell Us About an Ecological View on Metaphor

    F Max Muller, Cornelia Müller•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2019

Ecological-cognition approaches share the overall assumption that cognition is enacted, extended, embedded, and embodied. In this article, these basic assumptions are illustrated and critically evaluated from the point of view of gesture and film studies. In a theoretical introduction, the idea of metaphorizing as embodied interactivity is developed and connected with these basic assumptions of an ecological cognition approach to metaphor. Four c…

  • The “Negative-Assessment-Construction” – A multimodal pattern based on a recurrent gesture

    Open Access•Jana Bressem, F Max Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2017

This paper offers an analysis of a multimodal pattern of negative assessment, which takes as the starting point a particular recurrent gesture: the Throwing Away gesture. Recurrent gestures are characterized by a stabilized form-meaning pairing. In the case of the Throwing Away gesture, form and meaning are grounded in an “Away-Action-Scheme”: i. e., a socially shared, sedimented experience of removing unwanted objects at, on, or approaching a sp…

  • How recurrent gestures mean: Conventionalized contexts-of-use and embodied motivation

    F Max Muller•ARTICLE•Gesture•2017•Cited by: 25•References: 6

Drawing upon corpus analyses of recurrent gestures, a pragmatics perspective on gestural meaning and conventionalization will be developed. Gesture pragmatics is considered in terms of usage-based, embodied and interactively emerging meaning. The article brings together cognitive linguistic, cognitive semiotic and interactional perspectives on meaning making. How the interrelation between different types of context (interactional, semantic/pragma…

    M Dondero, C Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2012

The growth and geographic diversification of the school-age Latino population suggest that schools in areas that previously had very few Latinos now serve many of these students. This study uses the 1999-2000 Schools and Staffing Survey and the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to compare public high schools in new and established Latino destinations. We examine school composition, school quality indicators, instructional resources and access …

  • Memoirs of Baron Stockmar

Open Access•Ernst Alfred Christian Stockmar, F Max Muller et al.•BOOK•Memoirs of Baron Stockmar•2011

Christian Friedrich Baron Stockmar (1787–1863) was physician and advisor to Prince Leopold, son-in-law of George IV and later King of the Belgians. He was influential in promoting the marriage of Leopold's nephew Prince Albert to Queen Victoria, and became a trusted advisor to them both. His involvement in English politics was often seen as German interference in English matters, while in Germany he was regarded as an English spy. These two volum…

  • Embodied meaning construction: Multimodal metaphor and expressive movement in speech, gesture, and feature film

Hermann Kappelhoff, F Max Muller et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2011

In this article, we argue that multimodal metaphors are grounded in the dynamics of felt experiences. Felt experiences are inherently affective, with immediate sensory qualities and an affective stance. We suggest that as such, they ground the emergence and activation of metaphors. We illustrate this idea with analyzed data from a film and face-to-face conversation. Our consideration of expressive movement in speech, gestures, and feature film do…

    F Max Muller, Cornelia Müller•ARTICLE•Gesture•2005

The present article offers a condensed overview, of why a comparative view on gestures in human and nonhuman primates may offer important insights to both: researchers of human as well as of nonhuman primates. It is argued that a comparative view may further contribute to the debate over the evolution of language but that in addition it may also enhance understanding of the relation of language and gesture in humans. The article sketches programm…

The account given by an eye-witness of the religious, social, political, and literary state of India at the beginning of the seventh century of our era was like a rocket, carrying a rope to a whole crew of strugglin…
