  • Alcohol as evil – Temperance and policy

    Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2010

Beverage alcohol has developed indelibly different footprints in different cultures. Research shows, indeed, that how a culture views and appreciates alcohol impacts people's very likelihood of being addicted to it. In this context, the US and other Protestant English-speaking nations, and particularly Nordic ones, are characterized by intense binge drinking – amidst overall low consumption – leading to both social and health problems (including …

  • One of the major problems of our society”: Symbolism and evidence of drug harms in U.S. Supreme Court decisions

    Open Access•Douglas Husak, Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•1998

When a government action impinges on important individual rights, the United States Supreme Court is compelled to identify the harms it perceives in a behavior or practice in order to assess the constitutionality of a statute, a government policy, or a penalty. We select the six most recent cases in which the Court has expressed views about the harms it attributes to drug use. We conclude that the recent history of such Court justifications shows…

OBJECTIVES. The prevailing view today is that alcohol consumption is unambiguously a social and public health problem. This paper presents evidence to balance this view. METHODS. Evidence of beneficial effects of alcohol against coronary artery disease is examined, together with cultural reasons for resistance in the United States to the implications of this evidence. RESULTS. Alcohol use reduces the risk of coronary artery disease--the major cau…

  • Why and by Whom the American Alcohol Treatment Industry Is Under Siege

    Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1990

Conventional disease-based inpatient alcoholism treatment is under attack in the United States and internationally because it accomplishes little beyond simple counseling and is less effective than other life-skill-oriented therapies. Nonetheless, disease-model adherents retain a stranglehold on American alcoholism treatment and attack all "nontraditionalists" who question their approaches. One such attack by Wallace (1989) is discussed. In addit…

  • Personality, Pathology, and The Act of Creation: The Case of Alfred Hitchcock

    Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•Biography•1986

Recent biographies of Alfred Hitchcock-especially Spoto's (1983)-have emphasized the deterministic role of Hitchcock's emotional problems in his art. Such analyses of Hitchcock's personality and creativity touch on classic issues of the relationship between art and artist. However, any reduction of artistic themes like those in Hitchcock's films into terms of personal psychopathology is inadequate for apprehending artistic creation

  • The cultural context of psychological approaches to alcoholism: Can we control the effects of alcohol

    Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1984

The unique history of alcohol use in the United States has led to the ascendance of the disease theory as the dominant conception of alco- holism. Social-scientific research has consistently conflicted with the disease theory, but psychological and other nondisease conceptions of alcoholism are not well represented in the public consciousness, in treatment programs, or in policies for affecting na- tionwide drinking practices. Conflict in the fie…

Immediately prior to the 1970 parliamentary election in the Republic of South Africa, 462 white voters in Cape Town were questioned about their demographic backgrounds, voting intentions, and political attitudes. The study showed that ethnicity is the major determinant of party vote: Afrikaners vote for the National Party, the English-speaking for the United Party. SES-related factors predict party identification only insofar as they covary with …

  • Coloured Power" or "Coloured Bourgeoisie"? Political Attitudes Among South African Coloureds

    Stanley J Morse, Stanton Peele•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1974•Cited by: 8

Why have Coloureds in South Africa—people of mixed racial descent—voiced less opposition to white minority rule than have black Africans? A theoretical analysis suggests that Coloureds feel both “relatively deprived” in comparison with whites and “relatively gratified” in comparison with Africans, that they believe they may eventually be accepted by whites, and that individually they have difficulty identifying with the broader Coloured community…

This study found that participants in a large‐scale anti‐Vietnam war demonstration believed that a good citizen should play an active role in the political process. They also responded more positively toward ideological than traditional U.S. symbols, were oriented toward the international rather than national political syst…
