The Proliferation of Representation in Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty and Sergei Parajanov's The Colour of Pomegranates
This article argues that Antonin Artaud's theory of the theatre of cruelty, elaborated in The Theatre and Its Double, and the procedures of Sergei Parajanov's The Colour of Pomegranates (1969) bear a crucial affinity. Both offer many enigmatic emblems described as hieroglyphic and involving ritualized gesture. The theatre theorized by Artaud as well as Parajanov's film place representation into question, not by suppressing it, but by causing it t…
The Rhetoric of Reason: Language in Benjamin Fondane
Lev Shestov considers all discourse rhetorical. His work denounces rationalist discourse as an imposture that denies its own appeal to irrational impulses. Fondane’s poetry betrays the same consciousness of rhetoric: while it does not have a persuasive function per se, it involves circuits of address and oratorical concerns. In Fondane, there is a subjectivist tendency at work: selfhood can never be set aside. Fondane locates the self and the pas…
Ethical Writing and Commemoration: Benjamin Fondane's ‘Preface in Prose’ and the Philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas
The end of Benjamin Fondane's iconic poem, the ‘Préface en prose’, is inscribed at the entrance of Yad Vashem's Hall of Names. The quote is a resonant call to recognize the humanity of all victims in the poet's human countenance. This reference, among many other elements in this poem, prompts a comparison to Emmanuel Levinas's philosophy. The poem's speaker specifically resembles Levinas's ‘Other’. Contrary to Levinas, it is maintained that writt…
The Contemporary Hero in Sylvie Kandé’s Epic of Futurity, La Quête infinie de l’autre rive
Sylvie Kandé’s Quête infinie de l’autre rive revives and transforms the genre of the heroic verse narrative. Rather than commemorating a foundational moment in a community’s constitution, Kandé’s epic instead constitutes an epic of futurity, which announces a project that it calls on the reader to complete; namely, the project of conceptualizing an authentic contemporary hero-figure. For Kandé, such a modern-day hero might be found in the clandes…
Yves Bonnefoy and the "Genius" of Language
Yves Bonnefoy and the “Genius” of Language Alexander Dickow (bio) Along with poets such as Eugène Guillevic and Philippe Jaccottet, Yves Bonnefoy represents part of a wave of poets who contributed to reorienting post-World War II French poetry towards the everyday and the here and now, as opposed to the world of dreams and the marvelous glorified by Surrealism. For more than a half-century, Bonnefoy’s writings have constantly returned to that her…
