  • The strategic value of contradictions

Open Access•Jesse Schrage, Håvard Haarstad et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2024

Understanding how cities develop climate plans is crucial to capture their potential to achieve ambitious climate goals. Previous literature has highlighted the role of external pressures or heroic actors in driving local changes. By highlighting the everyday practices of actors in urban climate planning, we reveal new sets of contradictions in climate governance. Drawing from social practice theory, this paper examines how contradictions were ma…

Open Access•M P Frykman, Eugene Guribye et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2020

The article tackles the question of how place matters to migrant physicians in the regions of Agder in Norway and Skåne in Sweden by exploring how place-specific conditions affect their experiences in the work, private, family and social domains of life. Open Access•Knut Hidle•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2019•References: 17

The governance structure on which contemporary nature conservation policy and practice are based represents a new structure that may affect development strategies in rural municipalities. The empirical analysis is based on a qualitative longitudina…

  • Policy Strategies for New Regionalism

Knut Hidle, Einar Leknes•ARTICLE•European Planning Studies•2014

This article asks about differences and similarities in the way cultural policy and business policy deal with regions in Norwegian city regions. The article discusses New Regionalism as a particular spatial practice, and stresses the difference between regionalism as a bottom-up process driven by local stakeholders and regionalization as a top-down process driven by state bodies. The role and significance of New Regionalism in city-regional polic…

  • A crisis of definition

Jørn Cruickshank, Winfried Ellingsen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article addresses the influence of dominant and traditional ways of grasping the reality in social and economic processes of change. Our point of departure is how the perception of crisis in Odda, a small industrial community in Norway, influences the course of the process of change. The analysis focuses on a heated debate over the exploitation of a large site in the centre of Odda, left after the closure of the key factory. Rather than the …

  • Performing Home in Mobility

Winfried Ellingsen, Winfried Georg Ellingsen et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 30

This paper aims at studying how the increase in the number of second homes in Norway can be interpreted as an expression of changes in cultural attitudes towards home. We have set out to study two conceptual pairings in more detail: home and mobility, and centre (urbanity) and periphery (rurality). The former pairing is significant because the concept of home now has a subordinated role in the interpretation of post-modern society, while mobility…

  • Political Conceptions of Second Home Mobility

    Open Access•Knut Hidle, Winfried Ellingsen et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This article analyses how mobility between the first and second home, called second home mobility is conceptualised in Norwegian political discourse. We investigated two political fields in which second homes have entered this discourse: regional policy and policy for transport and infrastructure at the national level. Public and parliamentary policy documents and public newspaper records of debates constitute the empirical material. The article …

  • Urban—Rural Flows and the Meaning of Borders

Open Access•Knut Hidle, Arild Aurvåg Farsund et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This article focuses on political and everyday interplay and integration between city and hinterland, investigating borders and boundaries in such interplay. Five Norwegian city-regions served as the empirical basis for analysing two empirical fields. In the first field — everyday mobility and flow — institutionalized interactions between the cities and their hinterlands were analysed as well as objectives and meaning as motivations in everyday m…

  • Mobilitet og det multikulturelle byrom

    Open Access•Knut Hidle•ARTICLE•Nordisk Museologi•1970•References: 7

This article raises the question of what happens on a conceptual level when migrants arrive in a new place. The article shows how processes connected to the establishing of borders and boundaries and the transgressive are competing, intersecting processes within the same multicultural urban space. In the analysis, the concept of place myth is used in the sense of prototypical geographical conceptualizations of what place is. The way that the conc…
