  • What Did Smith Mean by the Invisible Hand

    William D Grampp•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2000•Cited by: 23•References: 4

The invisible hand is not a power that makes the good of one the good of all, and it is not any of a number of other things it is said to be. It is simply the inducement a merchant has to keep his capital at home, thereby increasing the domestic capital stock and enhancing military power, both of which are in the public interest and neither of which he intended. Smith's exposition discloses how his rhetorical sallies could disfigure his economics…

    Open Access•William D Grampp•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•1987•Cited by: 7•References: 8

British free trade has been variously attributed to the importuning of business interests, to the advanced state of manufacturing, to politicians acting on improper or unworthy motives, or to imperialism. Professor Grampp examines a critical event in the history of free trade: Parliament's declaration in 1820 that future commercial policy should be guided by that principle. By 1850, all major restrictions had been abolished. The decision of 1820,…

    Open Access•William D Grampp•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•1976•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The most curious of the detractors of classical economics said it was the work of Scots, Jews, and subversives. The charges were meant to turn back the movement toward the free market, but there was some truth in them. Classical economics did begin in Scotland, Ricardo was Jewish, it was the policy of the Parliamentary Radicals, and it did threaten some major institutions. The paper describes how and to what effect these facts were used by men wh…

  • Adam Smith and the Economic Man

    William D Grampp•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1948•Cited by: 17

We are told by men of science that all the ventures of mariners on the sea, all that countermarching of tribes and races that confounds old history with its dust and rumor, sprang from nothing more abstruse than the laws of supply and demand, and a certain natural instinct for cheap rations. To anyone thinking deeply, this will seem a dull and pitiful explanation.--Robert Louis Stevenson, Will o' the Mill
