Liselotte Frisk•ARTICLE•Nova Religio The Journal of…•2021

This article will discuss charisma and institutionalization in the Rajneesh/Osho movement between 1981 and 1985, during its Rajneeshpuram, Oregon phase, based on an interview with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh’s former secretary, known as Ma Anand Sheela. A model by sociologist Roy Wallis with different possibilities for the charismatic leader to respond to institutionalization will be applied, and a previous application by sociologist Susan J. Palmer w…

  • “Spiritual Shunning”

Liselotte Frisk•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Violence•2018

This paper argues that the practice of “spiritual shunning,” defined as deliberate isolation of one person from a religious group for alleged spiritual reasons, may have been a significant factor in a murder case which happened in Sweden in 2004 in a small religious group with a Pentecostal background. The material consists of interviews with four former members, who describe the process of spiritual shunning as it existed in the group before it …

  • Characteristics of Contemporary Religious Change

    Liselotte Frisk, Peter Nynäs•CHAPTER•Post-Secular Society•2017

This chapter focuses on changes in contemporary religion and in particular in relation to the globalization process. Globally, one aspect of religious change is that fundamentalist religious movements are thriving, aiming at reviving tradition, and making religion influential again in contemporary society. The chapter explores the more vague religious expressions of Western culture, related to New Age and the spirituality discourse, as responses …

This article presents the results of two local mapping studies in Sweden and Austria that follow the methodological procedure of the British Kendal project. All practitioners offering courses, therapies or counseling in the areas of holistic spirituality and complementary health methods (such as yoga, Reiki, kinesiology, astrology, and shamanism) were mapped. A sub-sample of the mapped practitioners were contacted in person and asked about their …

  • The practice of mindfulness

    Open Access•Liselotte Frisk•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•2012

The article focuses on the practice of mindfulness, which has migrated from being part of a religion, Buddhism, to being an integral part of Western psychology. Mindfulness is especially used in cognitive behavioural therapy, but also in, e.g., dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). In Sweden several doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists use and recommend mindfulness for therapeutic purposes. Mindful…

  • The Satsang Network

Liselotte Frisk•ARTICLE•Nova Religio The Journal of…•2002

This article describes and discusses a phenomenon I call the Satsang network, a group of Westerners claiming to have reached enlightenment. Several of these persons spent many years with the controversial guru, Osho; hence, I argue that one way of understanding the Satsang network is as a post-Osho development in which satsang holders become an example of how charismatic leaders emerge from institutionalized religious movements. Also discussed ar…
