In 1966 José Alcina Franch published preliminary descriptions of a remarkable group of 29 Zapotec colonial calendars in the Archives of the Indies. As colonial material on Zapotec calendars has been nearly non-existent, this find is very important. Alcina Franch illustrated some folios and discussed the solar tropical year which Calendar 21 provides. He noted the provisional nature of his findings, and indicated that fuller publication would foll…

    Open Access•Howard F Cline•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1969•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Historians generally see their tasks broken into three main stages: as comprehensive as possible collection of relevant documentation, followed by critical and evaluative appraisal of it, and finally, a synthesis based on verified data. Contrary to a considerable body of hostile secondary discussion, critical examination of Juan de Torquemada’s Monarquía Indiana indicates a surprisingly high level of workmanship in at least the first two phases. …

    Howard F Cline•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1965

ISTORIANS LOOK AT THE PAST. In the case of the Conference on Latin American History we do have a history, dating from at least 1928. Briefly I should like to highlight some important developments of the past decade. During that span the Conference has moved from a determined but underdeveloped group to a position of dignity and significance within the historical guild, and especially within the American Historical Association, with which we meet …

  • U. S. Historiography of Latin America

This essay places American historical research on Latin America within the more general context of American historiography. The present state of the art is evaluated and future directions outlined. The eclectic, non-exclusivist character of historical methodology is examined and related to the requirements of graduate training and interdisciplinary research. Mr. Cline is with the Hispanic Foundation of the Library of Congress

THE Relaciones Geogrdficas compiled on order of Philip II have long been recognized by historians as a major group of sources on sixteenth-century Spanish Indies. Surprisingly little, however, is found in the historiographical literature about this body of materials. They are replies by local officials in Middle and South America and apparently the Philippines to a standard questionnaire developed by imperial bureaucrats in Madrid, making 50 broa…

    Howard F Cline•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1949•Cited by: 29

One consistent strand of Hispanic imperial policy was the repeated attempt to civilize the native Indians by urbanizing them.1 Plans to this end were early announced and with varying results were tried from time to time throughout the colonial empire.2 The program of civil congregations in New Spain from 1598 to 1605 was a relatively late example of these persistent efforts to translate the ideal of urbanization into social fact. Administratively…

    Open Access•Howard F Cline•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1955•Cited by: 5•References: 3

CIVIL congregation of the Indians in New Spain was one phase of the continuing program which Spanish colonial officials had been conducting since earliest days in the New World to civilize and Christianize American native groups by urbanizing them. Application of this doctrine to New Spain as a whole in the years which began in the seventeenth century has been discussed elsewhere. Here the purpose is to fit the general procedures to a specific ca…

S INCE THE APPEARANCE of the invaluable Iandbook of South American Indians, edited by Julian Steward and published by the Smithsonian Institution (1941-1946; Index, 1959), hope that a comparable coverage of the Central American and Mexican areas would sometime be forthcoming was often expressed by individual scholars and various groups of investigators. It is pleasing to report that such hopes are nearer being realized. The Handbook of Middle Ame…

The 400th anniversary of the entrance into Chile of the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscans, is appropriately being commemorated by our presence here tonight. I am honored to have been asked to state briefly for you some of the highlights of their activities in that land during the colonial era. It is a relatively unpublicized story, but one worthy of retelling by those better equipped for the task than I am. Coming from the field of Mexican s…
