Male homosexual identities under transformation: Revisiting a Mexican community
This article is a restudy of a community of homosexual men with a feminine appearance, entering in relationships with ordinary looking men, in a poor barrio in Mexico where the author conducted fieldwork between 1988 to 1996 (Prieur 1998 a,b) and again in 2024. The informants claimed there were no problems related to social acceptance anymore. They expressed more positive attitudes towards their own male bodies, seeing it less as a source of sham…
To the Rescue of Cultural Capital: Seizing the Emotional Underpinnings of Contemporary Social Cleavages
The author declares no conflicts of interest. Data sharing not applicable to this article as no datasets were generated or analysed during the current study.
Righteous anger? How justifications of aggressive acts are received in Danish court
This article is based on the observation of 50 cases of violence, threats and offensive speech in a Danish city court, after which arguments presenting justifications of the anger behind the incidents have been systematised. By discerning between receivable and not receivable arguments in the sense that they are picked up by the professional actors in court and the arguments that appear not to be receivable as they are ignored or objected to, the…
Distinctions in the making: A theoretical discussion of youth and cultural capital
The aim of this paper is to address the dynamics of contemporary cultural capital by interrogating what counts for young people as valuable cultural resources. Considerable support is given in later scholarship for Bourdieu’s model of the social space, as the overall volume of economic and cultural capital combined is regularly found to be the most important axis of opposition, just as in Bourdieu’s work Distinction . Yet, while Bourdieu found th…
Lost and Gained in Translation
This self-examination is programmatically centered on language, examined by the author at the same time as a medium of cross-cultural communication (her work as PB's translator), the traces laid down that betray one's background (the «undefinable» accent that marks her polyglotism), and a form of domination (English linguistic imperialism in contemporary academia). Almost in self-help terms, Bourdieu's sociological theory is interpreted as an ant…
Policing by social skills: The importance of empathy and appropriate emotional expressions in the recruitment, selection and education of Danish police officers
Motivated politically by an interest in a friendlier, more service-minded police force, the Danish police have changed profoundly in recent decades. With a relatively low crime rate, strong democratic traditions, and exceptionally high levels of trust in the police, Denmark offers an interesting case for examining how a service-minded police force is created. The ideal, professional Danish police officer is supposed to engage in equal dialogue wi…

Living With Stigma: Spatial and Social Divisions in a Danish City
Inspired by Bourdieu's theory of homology between social, mental and spatial structures, this essay dissects the relationship between spatial and social divisions in the Danish city of Aalborg using varied data from official statistics, surveys, qualitative interviews and field observations. Spatial divisions reflect differences in the objective distribution of economic and cultural capital, and are accompanied by symbolic divisions in residents'…
Lacking social skills: A social investment state’s concern for marginalized citizens’ ways of being
The Danish state is preoccupied with its citizens’ social skills, which are seen as important for the nations’ competitiveness. Such skills regard self-presentation, communication, emotional control etc. This article relies primarily on interviews with Danish social workers who are involved either in assessing young marginalized welfare clients’ personal readiness for schooling or employment or in preparing them for this through social skills tra…
So, Why Am I Here?’ Ambiguous Practices of Protection, Treatment and Punishment in Danish Secure Institutions for Youth
This article explores how a nexus of punishment, treatment and protection creates unique mechanisms of control in secure institutions for young people. It is based on a study in Danish secure institutions, which accommodate young people confined on legal and welfare grounds. In these hybrid institutions, protection, treatment and punishment merge in ambiguous and contradictory practices that are experienced as unjust or even harmful by the young …
On the Reception of Bourdieu’s Sociology in the World’s Most Equal Societies
This chapter discusses the reception of Bourdieu in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, which are three of the richest, but also most egalitarian, societies in the world, with strong welfare state traditions. The sympathy toward Bourdieu’s thinking in Scandinavia may be linked to a resonance for his critique of domination and of neoliberalism; the strong resistance his thinking also has encountered stems from a denial of its relevance for Scandinavia. F…

The commodification of the personal: Labour market demands in the era of neoliberal postindustrialization
This article takes as its point of departure the observation that contemporary labour markets of highly developed capitalism have witnessed a new and profound focus on personal traits and characteristics such as social skills. We believe this focus is indicative of a new standard of ascribing value in contemporary capitalism and ask which are the societal and paradigmatic changes that may have led to this change. After an outline of demands to th…

Emerging Forms of Cultural Capital
This paper takes stock of recent research on patterns of cultural engagement in various European nations, with specific reference to British and Danish research. It argues that Bourdieu's original theorisation of cultural capital in ‘Distinction’ needs to be significantly updated to register the decline of ‘highbrow’ culture which these studies reveal. However, we argue that this shift does not entail the erosion of cultural capital itself, or th…
Updating cultural capital theory: A discussion based on studies in Denmark and in Britain
Kulturelle skel i Danmark
Class and Politics in Denmark: Are Both Old and New Politics Structured by Class
The trend within studies of voting and political attitudes has been to give less attention to class as a structuring dimension and more to postmaterial values. The basic argument of this article is that this is a false opposition: The adherence to different sets of values is related to social background, although in complex ways, which can only be discovered with a multidimensional conception of class. This conception may be found in Pierre Bourd…

Gender remix: On gender constructions among children of immigrants in Norway
Values and practices regarding sex and gender are among the most fundamental constituents of a society's symbolic system, as well as of an individual's self. Gendered ways of behavior are symbolic markers of ethnicity, both in a process of labeling from the outside and in the construction of a subjective identity. Based on interviews with children of immigrants from patriarchal societies living in Norway — one of the countries in the world where …

Basé sur une enquête auprès d'un groupe de travestis homosexuels dans un quartier populaire de Mexico, cet article analyse le cheminement de jeunes garçons vers une identité et une pratique homosexuelles, ainsi que vers une apparence…

Clients of prostitutes: Sick deviants or ordinary men? A discussion of the male role concept and cultural changes in masculinity
How can we explain the fact that some men buy sex, but most do not? Explaining both deviance and normality is a general problem in role theory. Based on a research project on the clients of prostitutes in Norway, this article argues for a model in which sex‐role theory is linked to classical theory of opportunity structure. Some men have to use illicit means in an attempt to live up to the general male ideal of dominance and power over women. Thi…

Bodily and Symbolic Constructions among Homosexual Men in Mexico
Female dressing and bodily transformations (like hormone injections and breast implants) are frequently used components in the personality constructions of male homosexuals in the urban popular classes in Mexico. This article, based on fieldwork among such vestidas in a suburb of Mexico City, seeks to analyze how they construct a style and an identity out of an interpretation of themselves, but at the same time in a dialogue with their surroundin…
Unge innvandrermenn, kriminalitet og kjønnskultur
Considerable differences regarding gender relations exist between the native Norwegian population and immigrants. The article raises the question whether such differences may influence criminal acts commited by some young, male immigrants. Based upon a discussion of the difficulties of a cultural explanation, the author argues that these young men's attitudes and practices regarding gender performance and relations cannot be seen as deriving from…
