  • Adolescent self‐construal across cultures: Measurement invariance of the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire‐IV in 30 countries

Open Access•Veljko Jovanović, Sabirah Adam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Despite the critical role of culture in understanding adolescent self and identity, there is a lack of cross-culturally validated measures of adolescent self-construal. The present study evaluated cross-national measurement invariance of the Aspects of Identity Questionnaire-IV (AIQ-IV), assessing four dimensions of self-construal: personal, relational, public, and collective. The sample included 16,795 adolescents aged 14-19 years from 30 countr…

This study examined the dynamic interplay between extraversion and subjectively per…

  • Feeling too low to be active: Physical inactivity mediates the relationship between mental and physical health

    Open Access•Gaja Zager Kocjan, Andreja Avsec et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 78

Results suggest that high levels of depression and low levels of subjective well-being may be an early warning sign of physical health problems. Interventions aimed at preventing or reducing mental health problems and promoting positive mental health may benefit not only mental health per se, but also prevent physical inactivity and, consequently, physical health problems

  • Covid-19 and Social Distancing: A Cross-Cultural Study of Interpersonal Distance Preferences and Touch Behaviors Before and During the Pandemic

    Open Access•Ilona Croy, Carina Heller et al.•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 48

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the introduction of unprecedented safety measures, one of them being physical distancing recommendations. Here, we assessed whether the pandemic has led to long-term effects on two important physical distancing aspects, namely interpersonal distance preferences and interpersonal touch behaviors. We analyzed nearly 14,000 individual cases from two large, cross-cultural surveys – the first conducted 2 years prior to…

Open Access•Andreja Avsec, Nikolett Eisenbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contextual Behavioral…•2022

People's psychological response to the COVID-19 pandemic is significantly affected by their psychological inflexibility. One possible mechanism explaining the association between psychological inflexibility and psychological functioning concerns coping styles. While avoidance and approach coping styles were previously found to mediate this association, the mediating role of meaning-centered coping has not yet been explored. However, meaning-cente…

    Open Access•David Lacko, Jiří Čeněk et al.•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 141

Individualism and collectivism are some of the most widely applied concepts in cultural and cross-cultural research. They are commonly applied by scholars who use arithmetic means or sum indexes of items on a scale to examine the potential similarities and differences in samples from various countries. For many reasons, cross-cultural research implicates numerous methodological and statistical pitfalls. The aim of this article is to summarize som…

  • Opposite Ends of the Same Stick? Multi-Method Test of the Dimensionality of Individualism and Collectivism

    Open Access•Vas Taras, Riikka Sarala et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 47

The construct of individualism-collectivism (IND-COL) has become the definitive standard in cross-cultural psychology, management, and related fields. It is also among the most controversial, in particular, with regard to the ambiguity of its dimensionality: Some view IND and COL as the opposites of a single continuum, whereas others argue that the two are independent constructs. We explored the issue through seven different tests using original …
