  • Survival through globalisation

    Open Access•Milan Balabán, Mária Hidvégi et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2025•References: 50

We present a comparative case study of two richly documented manufacturing firms in Central Europe to examine how economic nationalism and rising trade barriers shaped their global business strategies in the interwar period and how they managed to re-establish their global presence after 1945. From a provincial shoemaker in Moravia, Bata grew into the world’s largest footwear exporter by the 1930s with a global production and sales network that c…

  • Why did socialist economies fail? The role of factor inputs reconsidered

    Open Access•Tamás Vonyó, Alexander Klein•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 55

This article presents new estimates for investment and new growth accounts for three socialist economies between 1950 and 1989. Government statistics reported distorted measures for both the rate and the trajectory of productivity growth in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Poland. Researchers have benefited from revised output data, but have continued to use official statistics on capital input, or estimated capital stock from official investment dat…

  • The Economic Consequences of the War

Tamás Vonyó•BOOK•Economic Consequences of the War•2018

The 'German Question' dominated much of modern European history. In 1945, Germany was defeated and conquered. Yet, the Second World War did not destroy the foundations of her economic power. Dr Tamás Vonyó revisits Germany's remarkable post-war revival, tracing its roots not to liberal economic reforms and the Marshall Plan, but to the legacies of the war that endowed Germany with an enhanced industrial base and an enlarged labour force. He also …

  • War and socialism

    Open Access•Tamás Vonyó•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 11

This article reconsiders the relative growth performance of centrally planned economies in the broader context of postwar growth in Europe. It reports a new dataset of revised estimates for investment rates in eastern European countries between 1950 and 1989. Complemented with data on other growth determinants, this evidence is used to re‐evaluate the socialist growth record in a conditional convergence framework with a panel of 24 European count…

  • The Wartime Origins of the Wirtschaftswunder

    Open Access•Tamás Vonyó•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2014

The paper offers a detailed quantitative account of industrial development in West Germany between 1938 and 1955. It presents value-added, labour and capital input, labour productivity and TFP at industry level. Even though productivity growth was rapid by historical standards in the reconstruction phase after 1948, the expansion of industrial production between 1938 and 1955 was entirely input-driven. The resulting backlog in productivity growth…

  • Historical Economics of Wars in the 20th Century

    Open Access•Jochen Streb, Tamás Vonyó•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2014

To stimulate projects on the historical economics of wars in the 20th century we advocate three promising research strategies by reviewing recent studies that focus on international or inter-temporal comparisons and on the economic and social consequences of war
