Beatriz Sarlo, o rigor e a lucidez
This article analyzes the discursive, juridical, and political conditions of the environmental catastrophe of Belo Monte, a hydroelectric dam on the Xingu River with serious ecocidal consequences for the Amazon. The article traces the history of the project since its conception by the military dictatorship in 1975 through its several defeats at the hands of mobilized indigenous and riverbank Xingu populations in the 1980s and 1990s to its contest…
A Response to Fabiano Santos and Fernando Guarnieri
This article responds to Fabiano Santos and Fernando Guarnieri's dispatch, published under the title "From Protest to Parliamentary Coup: An Overview of Brazil's Recent History" in the December 2016 issue of JLACS. I start by pointing out several errors in the authors' use of terms such as "fascism" and "coup." I proceed to map out the omissions that allow them to portray Rousseff's impeachment in a moral and Manichean light, as a coup of maligna…

Machado de Assis on Popular Music: A Case for Cultural Studies in Nineteenth-Century Latin America
Dialoguing with a recent essay by composer and critic José Miguel Wisnik, this article discusses Machado de Assis' "Um Homem Célebre" and "O Machete" against the background of the music of nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro, particularly the evolution of polka into the first Brazilian urban genre, the maxixe. The premise is that Machado's fiction can help us rethink a number of questions pertaining to the then emerging realm of mass culture, the p…
The present paper reflects on the changes and continuities of the dictatorial experience in Brazil taking into account recent protests in 2013. It proposes an analysis that relates models of development, the colonising expansion towards Amazonia and the socio-political pact forged in the midst of the Brazilian post-dictatorship, with a special emphasis on the governments of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff. Under that light, protests …

This paper analyzes a pioneering novel in the literary tradition of the Colombian Caribbean: Ingermina, published by Juan José Nieto during his exile to Jamaica in 1844, and practically forgotten for a century and a half, until it was reedited in 1998. Ingermina tells of the conquest of the Kingdom of Calamar and its conversion into the colonial Cartagena of the New Granada. The text revolves around the love between an Indian woman and a Spanish …

The Muffled Cries: The Writer and Literature in Authoritarian Brazil, 1964-1985
In her well-documented The Muffled Cries: The Writer and Literature in Authoritarian Brazil, 1964–1985, Nancy T. Baden offers a wealth of information feeding into two narrative sequences, namely the institutional trajectory of censorship in Brazil, and the fiction banned by or written in response to censorship. The two strands take turns in Baden’s chronologically organized chapters, in which she studies several contemporary Brazilian authors and…
Heavy Metal Music in Postdictatorial Brazil: Sepultura and the Coding of Nationality in Sound
Preamble: ‘you censor what we breathe/prejudice with no belief’ (Sepultura, 1993) Heavy metal is a postdictatorial genre in Brazil, one whose musical and cultural significance is best grasped by mapping the various meanings acquired by metal music amongst urban youth during the decline of the military regime in the mid-1980s. As in most countries, speed, thrash and death metal evolved in Brazil primarily as working-class urban youth genres. Unlik…
Five Theses on Torture
The Ethics of Interpretation and the International Division of Intellectual Labor
Much of the work produced in recent years on the relationship between ethics and literature has responded to two major concerns: on the one hand, the possible or desirable role of literature as a source for ethical theory (Nussbaum, Love's Knowledge; Williams; McIntyre) and, on the other, the contribution of ethically-informed perspectives to the understanding of literature (Nussbaum, Love's Knowledge; Booth; Parker; Newton). Philosophers in sear…
