  • Approche comparée du constitutionalisme en Iran

    H E Chehabi, Houchang Chehabi•ARTICLE•Confluences Méditerranée•2020

  • Gender Anxieties in the Iranian Zūrkhānah

    Open Access•H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 16

The zūrkhānah is the traditional gymnasium of Iranian cities. Athletes exercised in a homosocial milieu that occasionally allowed for same-sex relations. Beginning in the 20th century, modern heteronormativity made such relations problematic, while gender desegregation allowed women to enter them. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, gender segregation was again imposed, while heteronormativity was maintained. In recent years, women have endeavo…

  • South Africa and Iran in the Apartheid Era

    H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2016

This article analyses the multifaceted relations between apartheid-era South Africa and Iran. In 1942, the exile of Iran’s ex-Shah in Johannesburg put South Africa on the map of Iran’s rulers. In the 1970s, close economic and military ties were established between the two states, based on economic complementarities and shared concern with the threat of communism and Soviet penetration into the Indian Ocean. By 1978, Iran provided over 90 per cent…

  • The Islamic Republic of Iran

    H E Chehabi, Asghar Schirazi•ARTICLE•Journal of Persianate Studies•2012•References: 12

Contemporary Iran plays a special role in the history of Islamic constitutionalism, as the constitution of 1979 was the first attempt since the debates over Pakistan’s Islamic Republic to derive the basic law of a modern state from Islamic principles. The Islamic Republic that came into being that year combines, as the name implies, Islamic and republican principles, which find institutional expression in a state that combines theocratic and repu…

  • Diversity at Alborz

    Open Access•H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2011•References: 4

This essay discusses the various dimensions of diversity at Alborz, both when it was run by the American missionaries and when it was under Iranian management. In the first part, the ascriptive traits of human beings are the object of the analysis: gender, race, language, religion and class. In both periods Alborz was characterized by its openness to Iranians of different religious backgrounds, both teachers and students. The second part of the e…

  • Iran’S Constitutional Revolution: Popular Politics, Cultural Transformations and Transnational Connections

    H E Chehabi, Vanessa Martin•BOOK•Iran’S Constitutional Revolution•2010

Born out of a fundamental tension between the old-fashioned and inadequate Qajar monarchy of Mozaffar al-Din Sah and Mohammad Ali Shah, and new reformist democratic ideals, the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1906 represents a pivotal moment in the formation of modern Iran. The collapse of the state through financial indigence and foreign pressure - which in the end also consumed the new regime - created a vacuum, which became the subject of…

    Open Access•H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 11

The last two decades have seen the construction of an Iranian “national cuisine” in cookbooks published outside Iran, while the post-revolutionary migration of Iranians from their country has led to the opening of Iranian (also called “Persian,” especially in the United States) restaurants all over the world. The menus of these restaurants evince a certain uniformity. Main dishes fall into three categories: chilawkabāb (white rice with grilled me…

    Open Access•Philippe Rochard, H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 2

A major ambiguity attaches to the zurkhanah, the traditional gymnasium of Iran. It is celebrated as an abode of chivalry and traditional values such as generosity, forbearance, and fair play, but it also has a reputation of harboring unruly elements on the margins of legality, men who are willing to rent their strong-arm services to whomever pays most. In this article I propose to explore this ambiguity and trace its roots in the social history o…

  • A Political History of Football in Iran

    Open Access•H E Chehabi•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2002•Cited by: 12•References: 4

In late 1997 Iranian football made international headlines. In an article on the Islamic summit held in Iran, The Economist wrote that almost "anything can become a political football in Iran, including football." This attention was precipitated by the political ramifications within Iran of the national team's tie against Australia in Melbourne on November 29th, which secured it a place in the 1998 World Cup in extremis. Since then, major interna…

America and Iran have not had diplomatic relations for two decades. In May 1997 the election of Mohammad Khatami, a reformist, to Iran's presidency provided an opening for a cautious rapprochement. Khatami advocated people‐to‐people contacts between the two nations to break the ice, and the United States agreed. After critically evaluating the idea of people‐to‐people contacts and discussing the role of the large Iranian diaspora in America as a …

This neglect vitiates our understanding of contemporary Iran, as it is at the local level that state policies are carried out, contested, reshaped, resisted, or revised. Beginning with the centralizing state-building of Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1926–41), Tehran increasingly dominated Iran's politics, comme…

Territorial conflicts often flare up where they are least expected. Who would have deemed it probable in early 1982 that Great Britain would send the better part of its navy to recover a faraway colony? There are almost as many conflicting territorial claims as there are borders. ' Most of them are known only to a small circle of experts and specialists in international law until one side runs out of patience (the motivation being purely domestic…
