  • Sámi Literature and Handicraft as Means of Communication

    Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•Culture•2021•References: 5

In this article various forms of expressive culture are treated. Different literary expressions as well as handicraft and art in modern form illustrate the general argument stressing the communicative aspect of ethnically defined art forms. Ethnic arts among the Sámi definitely add a significant dimension to their development of efficient means of ethno-political articulation. To achieve this aim it is necssary that the art producers unite the st…

  • On Craft and Art: Some Thoughts on Repatriation and Collecting Policy-The Case of Collections at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo

    Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The issue of repatriation is of increasing concern in the museum world. For many central museums it has become part of their policy-making agenda. Diverse features of intangible heritage, such as research-based knowledge and recordings as well as various photographic materials, supplement in our time what appropriately could be repatriated by way of sharing. Many indigenous cultures from which objects were collected at one time have now establish…

  • Knowledge and Artifacts: People and Objects

    Open Access•Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•Museum Anthropology•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 11

In the study of material culture, the connection between artifacts and knowledge is discernible. The knowledge derives primarily from people, the indigenous voice. To elucidate the inter-relationship between knowledge and objects, a narrative approach will be emphasized. The main argument relates to the connection of oral history, material culture, and ethnographic museums. My empirical frame of reference is the Sámi culture in Northern Fennoscan…

  • Interlegality, a Process for Strengthening Indigenous Peoples’ Autonomy: The Case of the Sámi in Norway

    Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Legal Pluralism…•2005

This article argues for the conception of interlegality as a more precise term explaining legal pluralistic arrangements. Interlegality is seen as a continuous process elucidating the interchange of legal perceptions between state law and non-state law, i.e. a dynamic approach to legal pluralism. The empirical case relates to the current Sámi situation in Norway, where a great deal of activity illustrating diverse forms of plurality in legal term…

  • On Customary Law: Inquiry into an Indigenous Rights Issue

    Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Customary law among indigenous, or Fourth World, peoples is part of comprehensive aboriginal rights. The political aspect of customary law has lately been emphasized as a strategic element of the general political agenda. As argued, this reactualization of customary law offers legitimacy to stated claims, at the same time cultural and political autonomy is reinforced. The article also attempts at certain conceptional clarification, differentiatin…

  • Indigenous Rights and Customary Law Discourse: Comparing the Nisga ́a and the Sámi

    Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Legal Pluralism…•2002

In Canada and Norway we are witnessing commensurable processes of social-structural change largely directed towards improving the conditions for indigenous peoples within these nation states. There are parallels in time, scope and objective between the processes affecting the Sámi in Norway and the Nisga ́a in northern British Columbia, Canada. In each case Aboriginal customary law, or customary rights, is a significant element both in legal and …

  • Clothing in the Arctic: A Means of Protection, a Statement of Identity

    Open Access•Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1992

The interest in clothing as a powerful item for cultural inquiry has recently increased among anthropologists. This has to do with its dual connection to habitat and cultural identity, allowing for ecological as well as symbolic analysis. The identification of contexts in which identity is communicated by means of clothing is considered an additional dimension to the study of clothing proper. Clothing is viewed as the most efficient means of non-…

  • The land claims issue and the Sámi: Reflections on contemporary legal struggle

    Open Access•Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•1988

  • Ethnopolitics among the Sámi in Scandinavia: A Basic Strategy toward Local Autonomy

    Open Access•Tom G Svensson•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1986

Communities in the far north face severe difficulties in trying to function as autonomous units due to the north-south axis in which northern resources are sought by southern industrial powers. Ethnopolitics as practiced by the Sámi in Scandinavia represent a political solution to those difficulties. For ethnopolitical processes to work to the advantage of the minority people, the communities must have a power base leading to local autonomy. Such…
