  • Australia-New Zealand Sociology

    Open Access•Adam Rajčan, E A Burns•ARTICLE•Sociology•2025•References: 42

This study brings three empirical findings from the Australia-New Zealand region to considering the current state of sociology in this part of the world. Focusing on sites of institutional disciplinary reproduction, we point to the disappearance of sociology-named organisational units, the spread of sociological PhDs across university faculties and the interdisciplinary nature of sociology PhD journal publishing. In the constant restructuring of …

  • Publishing during a sociology PhD in Australia

    Open Access•Adam Rajčan, E A Burns•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 37

We examined the latest decade of Australian sociology PhD completions for differences in the number and quality of research outputs students published during doctoral enrolment. There was no evidence of a statistically significant difference between Go8 PhD students and their non-Go8 PhD counterparts in terms of either the quantity of research publications achieved, or the quality of these publications as measured by high-impact journals. • Bourdieu's habitus clivé in voicing, feeling, being Aboriginal

    Open Access•Julie Andrews, E A Burns et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2022•References: 4

Bourdieu's concept of habitus clivé is discussed in relation to Aboriginal Australians’ experience within dominant White society. The argument is put forward that the concept can make an important contribution to illuminating Indigenous experience. At the same time there is an ever-present danger that habitus clivé becomes another tool for theorising about Aboriginal people, even if sympathetically, rather than a vehicle for Aboriginal expression…

  • Research productivity during PhD enrolment for New Zealand sociology 2010–19

    Open Access•Adam Rajčan, E A Burns•ARTICLE•Kōtuitui New Zealand Journal of…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Sociology has come late to the practice of publishing during PhD enrolment. This contrasts to fields such as science disciplines (STEM) and psychology where publishing during PhD is part of the disciplinary culture. In New Zealand sociology, over the last decade, the traditional PhD monograph continues to be the main format. Closer measurement of academic research outputs by the New Zealand Performance‐Based Research Fund (PBRF) creates new press…

  • Research productivity of sociology PhD candidates at interdisciplinary schools of social science at elite Australian universities, 2013-17

    Open Access•Adam Rajčan, E A Burns•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 22

Gender data are presented from a study into sociology PhD completions and student research outputs during enrolment at Australian 'Group of Eight' interdisciplinary schools of social science. Findings confirm views and impressions offered by Australian sociology academic leaders. The present data contributes to this wider discussion by describing patterns in the contemporary cohort of sociology PhD students. First, we document a stable gender com…

  • Suburban class habitus

    Adam Rajčan, E A Burns•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2020

Streetscapes of two middle-upper-class suburbs in Melbourne, the State capital city of Victoria, Australia, are photographically compared. Selected pairs of pictures from each streetscape are discussed and contrasted, each pair being considered for how it illustrates one of the five aspects or dimensions in the chosen photographs from the respective suburbs. The near-similarity, yet subtle differences, seen from the street, in the housing and pro…
