  • A Critical Realist Perspective on Decisions Involving Risk and Uncertainty

    Open Access•Rob Ranyard•ARTICLE•Polish Psychological Bulletin•2014

The relevance to decision research of recent advances in the philosophy of social science is considered. The critical realism of Roy Bhaskar argues for the identification of contextually contingent explanatory mechanisms at multiple levels based on concepts grounded in intersubjectively shared reality. Using examples from the author’s and other’s research on the psychology of decisions involving risk and uncertainty, this paper explores the impli…

This is the first of two reports of a study using semi‐structured, in‐depth interviews to explore the current and recollected experiences of Irish people for the period before, during, and after the introduction of euro notes and coins (1 January 2002). Twenty‐four adults, 12 males and 12 females, covering a range of ages and educational attainment, were interviewed between October 2002 and February 2003. We found that most had welcomed the new c…

  • Chinese and English Probabilistic Thinking and Risk Taking in Gambling

    Open Access•Lai-Yin Lau, Rob Ranyard•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This study investigated cultural differences in probabilistic thinking and risk taking. A View of Uncertainty Questionnaire assessed the probabilistic thinking of Chinese and English gamblers and nongamblers and a hypothetical Horse Racing Task assessed risk-taking behavior ( N = 120). The Chinese exhibited significantly less probabilistic thinking and riskier gambling decisions. A path analysis found that degree of probabilistic thinking was one…

  • A conversation‐based process tracing method for use with naturalistic decisions

Open Access•Janis Williamson, J Peter Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2000•Cited by: 2

This study is an evaluation of a process tracing method developed for naturalistic decisions, in this case a consumer choice task. The method is based on Huber et al. 's (1997) Active Information Search (AIS) technique, but develops it by providing spoken rather than written answers to respondents' questions, and by including think aloud instructions. The technique is used within a conversation‐based situation, rather than the respondent thinking…

  • Chinese and English Speakers' Linguistic Expression of Probability and Probabilistic Thinking

    Open Access•Lai-Yin Lau, Rob Ranyard•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Previous research found that when bilingual Chinese speakers responded to a View of Uncertainty Questionnaire (VUQ) in English, they exhibited greater nonprobabilistic thinking than did native English speakers. This study compares English and Chinese speakers' responses to a VUQ in their native languages. Their responses to a Probability Scale Task (PST), in which respondents labeled a numerical scale in their own language, also were compared. On…

Open Access•Rob Ranyard, BILL HEBENTON et al.•ARTICLE•The Howard Journal of Criminal…•1994

Guideline judgments in English sentencing have been subjected to little scrutiny by criminologists. This article provides a cognitive psychological perspective on one particularly important guideline judgment, Regina v. Billam and Others which concerns the sentencing of rapists. The authors analyse Billam's internal logic, the kind of sentencing practice prescribed and how the guideline is being applied. A sample of post‐Billam cases where a sent…
