  • John Hus: A Biography

    Matthew Spinka•BOOK•John Hus•2017

In this biography the author extends our understanding of the personality and work of the man he has characterized as "essentially a reformer whose ideal was the pure church." Since 1915, the date of the last similar study of Hus, a great deal of new information has become available, especially in the Czech language. Professor Spinka has based his study on these new materials and on critical works about Hus. He has also abstracted Hus' writings, …

It is not generally known that during the late fourteenth and the early fifteenth centuries, England and Scotland were in fairly close cultural relations and religious contacts with Bohemia. But such was the case. The earliest such connection is traceable to the endowment established by Vojtěch Ranků of Ježov (Adalbertus Ranconis de Ericinio) for Czech students wishing to study at Oxford or Paris. Vojtěch was one of the most learned Czech Masters…

John Amos Comenius (1592-1670) is best known to the world as the pioneer of modern educational theories and methods. More particularly is he remembered as the author of a series of elementary Latin textbooks for which many generations of schoolboys in the bygone days have called him blessed. But although he has richly deserved the praise he has received for his pedagogical reforms, that contribution by no means exhausts his astonishingly many-sid…

  • Berdyaev and Origen: A Comparison

    Open Access•Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•Church History•1947•References: 1

Canon Raven of the University of Cambridge, in his recently published book, expressed a significant, if somewhat startling, judgment regarding the historical trend of Western theology:The first adequate theology, still perhaps the noblest ever formulated, [was] the Logos theology of the Greek Apologists, which had its fullest expression in the Christian Platonism of Clement of Alexandria and Origen. ... It is one of the tragedies of history that …

    Open Access•Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•Church History•1943•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Among the outstanding figures of the period of the "flowering of the Czech Reformation," Peter Chelčický occupies a prominent, and in some respects à unique, position. Although not as well known as John Hus, from certain points of view Peter is more important, certainly more original, than the great Czech Reformer, insofar as in his radical biblicism he went far beyond the latter. Moreover, his influence lived on in the Unity of Brethren and affe…

  • Patriarch Nikon and the Subjection of the Russian Church to the State

    Open Access•Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•Church History•1941•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Patriarch Nikon is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in Russian church history. A zealous, although needlessly harsh and domineering, reformer of the church, forceful to the point of being dictatorial in the exercise of his patriarchal office, his endeavor to make the church independent of the state precipitated a struggle which in the days of Peter the Great culminated in the abolition of the patriarchate and the subjugation of the c…

  • Religious Movements in Czechoslovakia

    Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•The Journal of Religion•1923

Among the war-born national states of Europe none has attained a more favorable economic status, stable government, and cultural development than the republic of Czechoslovakia. In the story of its truly remarkable progress, not a mean place is occupied by the religious movements. Czechoslovakia has witnessed not only the rebirth of an ancient, indigenous church, highly honored in the general history of the Christian church for its mighty influen…

  • The Conversion of Russia

    Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•The Journal of Religion•1926

This article undertakes to study anew a subject about which little is accurately known. The recent researches of the Russian Professor Golubinskiĩ have furnished much material of value, and a rewriting of this chapter in church history is now possible

  • The Russian Progressive Religious Thought

    Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•The Journal of Religion•1926

The Russian Orthodoxy, tenacious of the primitive dogmas and usages, evoked in modern times two divergent modes of reaction. One, accepting Western philosophies and science, rejected the dogmas of the church, and resulted in the more recent times in the anti-religious attitude of the communistic party. But by way of reaction, there arose a much more religiously minded group which placed exaggerated estimate upon the Russian nationalism and Orthod…

  • Slavic Translations of the Scriptures

    Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•The Journal of Religion•1933

WHEN those ancient precursors of Bible translators, the Greek brothers Constantine and Methodius, translated certain parts of the Scriptures and the liturgical books into Slavic for the use of their Moravian converts, they did more than such praiseworthy literary exercise would ordinarily imply: they affirmed and successfully maintained the right and propriety of the liturgical use of other languages than the three sacred tongues hitherto acknowl…

  • Post-War Eastern Orthodox Churches

    Open Access•Matthew Spinka•ARTICLE•Church History•1935

From the downfall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the center of Eastern Orthodoxy slowly shifted from the Byzantine church, which suffered a tragic deterioration under the rule of the Turk, to the Empire of the Russian Orthodox tsars. Before the World War, the predominant rôle in numbers and resources as well as in spiritual and theological leadership was played by the church of Russia. Out of the total of some 144 millions of Orthodox adherents…
