Rulership and Divinity: The Case of the Modern Hindu Prince and Beyond
The former rulers of Princely India present to many people a simple stereotype. Surrounded by pomp and luxury, they are thought to have headed autocratic and tradition-based regimes in which their word was law and their desires untrammeled, since they were considered to be in some way divine because of their descent from such deities as the sun and moon. Moreover this view, by implication, contrasts with the democratic regime which followed the a…
The Funeral of the Emperor of Japan
Afin de mieux faire ressortir la signification des funerailles de l'empereur Hirohito en 1989, l'A. retrace brievement l'histoire des rites funeraires au Japon. Some Political Implications of Community Development in India
One of the major factors of change in rural India since Independence has been the programme of community development inaugurated in 1952 by the Government. Stemming from experimental schemes in pre-Independence times, the programme has been carried to a majority of the nation's villages. Its main aims are to raise the standards of living of the rural populace, and to aid in the establishment of democratic local government and in the stimulation o…

I NDIA S RURAL DEVELOPMENT program is one of most significant social experiments in Asia today. Any attempt to alter standard of living of a country of India's size and importance would be of major interest, but type of scheme which is now under way in India deserves added attention., For one thing, field of operation is wider than has hitherto been usual. Whereas other schemes have been based on mass education, or rural advisory councils situate…
