Reflections of a Troglodyte Historian of Science
For most of the twentieth century, historians of science pursued their discipline largely from the standpoint of the history of ideas (internalism), and only toward the end of the century did they expand its horizons to the social context (externalism), which now dominates the discipline. I explain how I came to accept the importance of the social context approach and then reject the claim that the history of science has been largely Eurocentric.…

With the passing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on September 16, 2010, of John Emery Murdoch, a Fellow of the Medieval Academy since 1992, medieval studies lost a particularly penetrating and lucid student of Scholastic mathematics and philosophy
How Theology, Imagination, and the Spirit of Inquiry Shaped Natural Philosophy in the Late Middle Ages
Historians of science have long debated historiographical issues and have even come to regard some of them as rather passe. It is therefore appropriate to speak of an Age of Re…

Celestial Motions in the Late Middle Ages
With the introduction of Greco-Islamic science and natural philosophy, medieval natural philosophers were confronted with three distinct astronomical systems: Aristotelian, Ptolemaic, and the system of al-Bitruji. A fundamental problem that each had to confront was how to explain simultaneous contrary motions in the heavens -for example, the sun's motion, which moves east to west with a daily motion while simultaneously moving west to east along …
