  • The Media of Sensation

    Niklaus Largier•CHAPTER•Anthropology of Catholicism•2017

This chapter discusses the significance of medieval practices of prayer both for the modern rediscovery of media and for the anthropology of sensation. It demonstrates how medieval theories of reading, prayer, and contemplation thematize ways in which specific media—words, images, and music—are to be used in order to produce sensual and affective cognition. In doing so, these theories develop a sophisticated understanding of media on one side, an…

  • The Plasticity of the Soul: Mystical Darkness, Touch, and Aesthetic Experience

    Niklaus Largier•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2010•Cited by: 1

The Plasticity of the Soul: Mystical Darkness, Touch, and Aesthetic Experience Niklaus Largier (bio) In this essay I want to address a question I have had for some time: Why is it that Alexander Gottfried Baumgarten, the founder and inventor of the modern philosophical discipline of aesthetics in the mid-eighteenth century, makes reference to the "ground of the soul," the "fundus animae," calling our attention to a basic concept that, as he point…

  • Mysticism, Modernity, and the Invention of Aesthetic Experience

    Niklaus Largier•ARTICLE•Representations•2009•Cited by: 3

In this article I argue that Luther's critique of the radical reformers establishes a specific distinction between the spiritual and the secular. It excludes the use of inspired speech and mystical tropes from legitimate readings of the Bible and from the political sphere. In doing so, Luther's intervention not only neutralizes certain mystical traditions but also prepares the grounds for the use of mystical tropes in a new epistemological space,…

  • Praying by Numbers: An Essay on Medieval Aesthetics

    Niklaus Largier•ARTICLE•Representations•2008•References: 1

In this essay I argue that the imitation of examples of sainthood in the practice of prayer is the formal basis of a medieval aesthetics that focuses on the animation and the phenomenology of sensation and emotion. Quoting from this tradition and drawing on the mechanical character of such techniques of animation, nineteenth and twentieth-century authors and filmmakers-Flaubert, Huysmans, and Buñuel-explore the aesthetic possibilities of these re…
