Modeling Preference and Willingness to Pay for Drought Tolerance (DT) in Maize in Rural Zimbabwe
Maize plays a leading role in the food security of millions in southern Africa, yet it is highly vulnerable to the moisture stress brought about by the erratic rainfall patterns that characterize weather systems in the area. Developing and making drought-tolerant maize varieties available to farmers in the region has thus long been a key goal on the regional development agenda. Farm-level adoption of these varieties, however, depends on local per…
Applied Choice Analysis
The second edition of this popular book brings students fully up to date with the latest methods and techniques in choice analysis. Comprehensive yet accessible, it offers a unique introduction to anyone interested in understanding how to model and forecast the range of choices made by individuals and groups. In addition to a complete rewrite of several chapters, new topics covered include ordered choice, scaled MNL, generalized mixed logit, late…
Streetscape Features Related to Pedestrian Activity
By measuring twenty streetscape features and numerous other variables for 588 blocks in New York City, we were able to identify variables that explain pedestrian traffic volumes. We found significant positive correlations between three out of twenty streetscape features with pedestrian counts after controlling for density and other built environmental variables. The significant streetscape features are the proportion of windows on the street, the…
Varying influences of the built environment on household travel in 15 diverse regions of the United States
This study pools household travel and built environment data from 15 diverse US regions to produce travel models with more external validity than any to date. It uses a large number of consistently defined built environmental variables to predict five household travel outcomes – car trips, walk trips, bike trips, transit trips and vehicle miles travelled (VMT). It employs multilevel modelling to account for the dependence of households in the sam…
Accounting for attribute non-attendance and common-metric aggregation in a probabilistic decision process mixed multinomial logit model
Predicting Transportation Outcomes for Leed Projects
The article first estimates models of mode choice and average trip length for 239 diverse mixed-use developments in six diverse regions. It then applies these models to twelve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) pilot projects to predict approximate vehicle miles of travel (VMT) per person trip. Finally, it compares LEED-ND values to regional average values from the National Household Travel Survey…

Fixed Effects Vector Decomposition
Plümper and Troeger (2007) propose a three-step procedure for the estimation of a fixed effects (FE) model that, it is claimed, “provides the most reliable estimates under a wide variety of specifications common to real world data.” Their fixed effects vector decomposition (FEVD) estimator is startlingly simple, involving three simple steps, each requiring nothing more than ordinary least squares (OLS). Large gains in efficiency are claimed for c…

Modeling Ordered Choices
It is increasingly common for analysts to seek out the opinions of individuals and organizations using attitudinal scales such as degree of satisfaction or importance attached to an issue. Examples include levels of obesity, seriousness of a health condition, attitudes towards service levels, opinions on products, voting intentions, and the degree of clarity of contracts. Ordered choice models provide a relevant methodology for capturing the sour…

The Econometric Approach to Efficiency Analysis
This chapter provides an overview of techniques for econometric analysis of technical (production) and economic (cost) efficiency. The stochastic frontier model of Aigner, Lovell, and Schmidt (1977) is now the standard econometric platform for this type of analysis. The underlying models and econometric techniques that have been used in studying technical inefficiency in the stochastic frontier framework are surveyed, and some of the recent devel…

The Importance of Check-Cashing Businesses to the Unbanked
The roughly 9.1% of all U.S. families that are without some type of transaction account (unbanked) are disproportionately represented among minorities. The unbanked often must rely on alternative ways to carry out basic financial transactions such as cashing payroll checks and paying bills. This study analyzes unique survey data and finds that a consumer's decision to patronize check-cashing businesses is jointly made with the decision to be unba…

Deriving Willingness-to-Pay Estimates of Travel-Time Savings from Individual-Based Parameters
There is a small but growing literature that promotes the derivation of distributions of willingness-to-pay (WTP) estimates using information specific to each individual observation. These are referred to as individual conditional distributions, in contrast to approaches that rely on unconditional distributions that use random assignment in the construction of WTP distributions within a sampled population. The interest in alternative specificatio…
Applied Choice Analysis
Almost without exception, everything human beings undertake involves a choice. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the development and application of quantitative statistical methods to study choices made by individuals with the purpose of gaining a better understanding both of how choices are made and of forecasting future choice responses. In this primer the authors provide an unintimidating introduction to the main techniques …

Economies of Scale in U.S. Electric Power Generation
We estimate economies of scale for U.S. firms producing electric power. Cross-section data for 1955 and 1970 are analyzed using the translog cost function. We find that in 1955 there were significant scale economies available to nearly all firms. By 1970, however, the bulk of U.S. electricity generation was by firms operating in the essentially flat area of the average cost curve. We conclude that a small number of extremely large firms are not r…

Reverse Regression
How should discrimination in the marketplace be defined? The answer is less obvious than it might seem. As Conway and Roberts (1983) suggest, there are various definitions. The data may suggest that for given qualifications, in given jobs, women are paid less than men, suggesting discriminatory behavior. But the same data set may or may not suggest that at given salary levels, women and men have the same qualifications. What should we conclude in…

The Restricted Least Squares Estimator
The authors obtain expressions for the restricted least squares estimator and its covariance matrix in the classical regression model when the matrix of regressors is not necessarily of full rank. The standard expressions for the restricted least squares estimator are not usable in the short rank case because they rely on the unrestricted estimator. But, in the presence of restrictions, the restricted least squares estimator may be computable eve…

Teaching Statistics and Econometrics to Undergraduates
Traditionally econometrics and economics statistics have been taught in the theory and proof, chalk and talk mode commonly found in the teaching of mathematics. We advance the use of computer technology in the teaching of quantitative methods to get students actively engaged in the learning process. We also assert that the essential tasks for those who teach these courses are to identify important issues that lend themselves to quantitative analy…

School Location and Student Travel Analysis of Factors Affecting Mode Choice
This study is the first to examine the relationship between mode of travel to school and the full range of factors that might affect mode choice. With data from Gainesville, Florida, a multinomial logit model was estimated to explain school mode choice for a sample of K-12 students. Students with shorter walk or bike times to school proved significantly more likely to walk or bike. If confirmed through subsequent research, this finding argues for…
Fixed Effects and Bias Due to the Incidental Parameters Problem in the Tobit Model
The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) in nonlinear panel data models with fixed effects is widely understood (with a few exceptions) to be biased and inconsistent when T, the length of the panel, is small and fixed. However, there is surprisingly little theoretical or empirical evidence on the behavior of the estimator on which to base this conclusion. The received studies have focused almost exclusively on coefficient estimation in two binary c…
The behaviour of the maximum likelihood estimator of limited dependent variable models in the presence of fixed effects
The nonlinear fixed‐effects model has two shortcomings, one practical and one methodological. The practical obstacle relates to the difficulty of computing the MLE of the coefficients of non‐linear models with possibly thousands of dummy variable coefficients. In fact, in many models of interest to practitioners, computing the MLE of the parameters of fixed effects model is feasible even in panels with very large numbers of groups. The result, th…
