  • The Research and Advocacy Group for Hunter Gatherer Education

Jennifer Hays, Velina Ninkova et al.•ARTICLE•AnthropoChildren•2019

Contemporary hunter-gatherers are among the most marginalized peoples in the world today, and face severe threats to their cultures, their livelihoods, and in many places – their very existence. Although formal education – schooling – is often presented as a solution for marginalized groups, generally social hierarchies are reproduced through such systems, and the extreme marginalization of hunters and gatherers in modern societies is mirrored in…

    Open Access•Sidsel Saugestad•ARTICLE•Norsk antropologisk tidsskrift•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 4

  • Regional and indigenous identities in the high north: Enacting social boundaries

    Open Access•Sidsel Saugestad•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 9

This paper addresses two processes of social and cultural mobilisation. The first example is a regional movement, as manifested in social and cultural expressions of a north Norwegian identity that was particularly marked in the 1970s and early 80s. The other is the Saami movement, coming out strongly at about the same time, and being part of a global process of indigenous mobilisation. It is argued that although they are similar in the way they …

It provides a case study of a court case contesting the removal of San inhabitants of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) in Botswana that went on from 2004 to 2006. The focus is on the transnational aspects of events leading up to, taking pla…

  • News Notes on the outcome of the ruling in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve case, Botswana

    Sidsel Saugestad•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2006•Cited by: 2

The ruling in the case on rights to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve can be looked at from three perspectives. a) The judgement on December 13 was considered a success from the point of view of the applicants. b) The follow up has sought to minimise the impact as much as possible, heralded by a rather restricting statement from the Attorney General. c) And there has been a new kind of engagement by Botswana’s government in the international aren…

  • Improving their lives’: State policies and San resistance in Botswana

    Sidsel Saugestad•ARTICLE•Hunter Gatherer Research•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 3

A court case raised by a group of San (former) hunter-gatherers, protesting against relocation from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, has attracted considerable international attention. The Government of Botswana argues that the relocation was done in order to ‘improve the lives’ of the residents, and that it was in their own best interest. The residents plead their right to stay in their traditional territories, a right increasingly acknowledge…

    Sidsel Saugestad•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2000•References: 2

This article chronicles Norwegian support to the Remote Area Development Programme in Botswana. It includes background on Norwegian international commitment to the development of indigenous peoples, and explores the way these principles have been handled in a concrete case of development assistance. The analysis demonstrates how an emphasis on poverty alleviation may lead to welfare policies and a clientisation process that come in opposition to …
