  • Multiscalar (Dis)connections in Medical Education and Healthcare Work in Romania and Beyond

Open Access•Sarah Hartmann, Elena Trifan•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2026

Healthcare systems worldwide face growing challenges related to workforce shortages, uneven personnel distribution, governance and long‐term sustainability. The training and mobility of healthcare professionals are central to these challenges, yet the interdependencies between medical education, healthcare provision, workforce planning and mobility are often governed across different institutions, policy domains and scales. This article examines …

  • A dynamic network approach to bilingual child data

Open Access•Antje Endesfelder Quick, Sarah Hartmann et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Linguistics•2026•References: 7

Usage-based approaches to language acquisition emphasize the central role of input–output relationships in the gradual emergence of linguistic knowledge. Recent computational work has provided empirical support for this view by showing how network-based analyses can capture constructional patterns in child language. One such method is the Dynamic Network Model (DNM). However, it remains unclear whether these findings extend to bilingual acquisiti…

  • Beyond the view: Exploring embodied experiences in rural landscapes

Open Access•Annina Helena Michel, Sarah Hartmann et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2025•References: 49

This paper explores how people living in rural Switzerland experience and make sense of their everyday landscapes. With the go-along method, we explore how emotions, memories, and embodied practices shape what it means to be-in-landscape. The go-along interviews revealed that being-in-landscape is both bodily and temporal, and formed through movement, sensory engagement, and the rhythms of daily life. Temporalities in particular are central to ou…

  • Smoothness as a quality of care: An STS approach to transnational healthcare mediation

    Open Access•Sarah Hartmann•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•References: 39

Medical travel and transnational healthcare involve various difficulties such as the distance and disconnect between patients and healthcare providers, language barriers or logistical challenges of moving ill bodies across space. Medical travel facilitation steps in with some sort of brokerage service that contributes to overcoming or managing these difficulties and, as this paper suggests, acts to create a quality of 'smoothness'. By unpacking t…

  • Care ethics in transnational healthcare: Attentiveness, Competence, and Responsibility in Medical Travel Facilitation

    Open Access•Sarah Hartmann•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 43

Travelling abroad and seeking healthcare beyond the national healthcare system is a reality for many patients, and a whole industry has evolved around medical travel over the last decades. Transnational healthcare is highly mediated, and different sorts of facilitators contribute to making medical travel more feasible and comfortable for international patients. However, the negotiation of different options, interests, and values around care is ch…

  • Cjeu: Germany’s Public Prosecution Authorities Cannot be Regarded as a “Judicial Authority” with Regard to EAWs—The Truth or a Misconstrual of the Legal Reality

    Open Access•Sebastian Glaser, Sarah Hartmann•ARTICLE•German Law Journal•2022

The judgment rendered by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on May 27, 2019, deemed Germany’s prosecution service ( Staatsanwaltschaft ) legally incompetent for the purpose of issuing European arrest warrants (EAW) due to its lack of institutional independence. As a consequence, the question of how the German criminal prosecution system differs from the approaches taken by other European countries issuing European arrest warrants a…

  • Mobilising patients towards transnational healthcare markets - insights into the mobilising work of medical travel facilitators in Delhi

    Sarah Hartmann•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 49

Medical travel facilitators play an important role in mobilising patients towards transnational healthcare markets. However, little is known about the actual mobilising work of medical travel facilitators located at destination sites, such as Delhi, India. The following ethnographic study suggests conceptualising medical travel facilitators as brokers who are productive of a mobility infrastructure. This allows categorising three mobilisation str…

  • "At School We Don't Pay Attention Anyway" - The Informal Market of Education in Egypt and Its Implications

    Sarah Hartmann•ARTICLE•Sociologus•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The majority of Egyptian high school students and a large number of elementary students take private lessons in addition to regular classes at school. These private lessons are usually offered either at students' homes or in special “tutoring centres”. Due to the deficits of the overburdened public education system, the process of teaching and learning has partly been shifted into the informal and private sphere. Based on several months of ethnog…
