Contrasting socio-economic influences on colorectal cancer incidence and survival in England and Wales
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and second most common cause of cancer death. The relationship between socio-economic deprivation and CRC incidence is unclear and previous findings have been inconsistent. There is stronger evidence of an association between area-level deprivation and CRC survival; however, few studies have investigated the association between individual-level socio-economic status …
Quality of life profiles and their association with clinical and demographic characteristics and physical activity in people with a stoma
This study was the first to identify latent profiles within this population and assess whether certain variables are associated with membership. Future research should build upon this to identify additional variables associated with these profiles, which can help to provide the basis for targeting and tailoring future interventions to specific subgroups of people with a stoma
Cancer-related symptoms, mental well-being, and psychological distress in men diagnosed with prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation therapy
While the majority of men treated with ADT did not report poor psychological outcomes, a small proportion reported severe problems. Clinically significant fatigue was demonstrated as a possible indicator of poor outcomes. Healthcare systems need to have clear protocols in place which specifically and routinely target psychological distress and fatigue
Cultural Keystone Places
Sense of place" as an anthropological, geographical, and philosophical construct has been a focus of research in recent decades, particularly following the publication of Keith Basso's Wisdom Sits in Places. Simultaneously, the emergence of the concept of social-ecological systems and their value in the application of conservation and restoration practices has highlighted the unique benefits of recognizing the interconnectedness of social and eco…

OP52 Multilevel Latent Class Modelling of Colorectal Cancer Survival Status and Socioeconomic Background
Background Many factors influence survival from colorectal cancer, including stage of diagnosis, treatment centre, and associated risk factors such as age, sex and socioeconomic background (SEB). Previous studies have typically considered stage of disease as a potential confounder. Stage however may lie on the causal path between SEB and survival. Statistical adjustment for stage as a confounder can therefore introduce interpretational difficulti…
Our plants, our land
Changes in subsistence practices have negatively affected the social and economic structure of aboriginal communities across the Arctic. This has resulted in fewer opportunities for the transmission of traditional knowledge (TK). This article provides two case studies of how researchers can assist northern communities in TK transmission and provide a venue for science and TK to meet, thereby fostering a positive relationship between scientists an…
Using routinely collected health data to investigate the association between ethnicity and breast cancer incidence and survival
Breast cancer incidence was lower in the South Asian group than in the White group. After adjusting for casemix there were no consistent survival differences amongst the ethnic groups. Although the impact of missing data and multiple ethnicities was minimal in this study, researchers should always consider these issues, as the results may not be generalisable to other populations and datasets
Latent class modelling of the association between socioeconomic background and breast cancer survival status at 5 years incorporating stage of disease
BACKGROUND: Stage of disease and socioeconomic background (SEB) are often used to 'explain' differences in breast cancer outcomes. There are challenges for all types of analysis (eg, survival analysis, logistic regression), including missing data, measurement error and the 'reversal paradox'. This study investigates the association between SEB and survival status within 5 years of breast cancer diagnosis using (1) logistic regression with and wit…
Investigating the association between ethnicity and survival from breast cancer using routinely collected health data
western Germany has not yet been elucidated due to the scarcity of population-based data on CVD morbidity and risk factors. Objective: To provide data on the distribution of CVD and its risk factors in an elderly general population in eastern Germany as compared to a western German population. Methods: Cross-sectional data of 1779 East German participants of the population-based CARLA Study aged 45-83 at baseline were used to calculate sex-and ag…
