Training Salon Professionals to Address Intimate Partner Violence and Sex Trafficking
Sex trafficking and intimate partner violence (IPV) often co-occur and are under-identified. Salon professionals frequently encounter victims but lack proper training to intervene. This study developed, piloted, and evaluated an online training program for eight Indiana salon professionals. Participants demonstrated significant increases in knowledge of IPV and sex trafficking (r = 0.93) and confidence in identifying victims of IPV (r = 0.84). In…
Advancing Measurement of Correctional Officer Health and Wellness
Correctional work is associated with high levels of stress and poor sleep quality. Although previous research has primarily relied on correctional officers’ perceptions of these outcomes, biometric indicators can provide more objective and continuous information. Using daily data points collected from smartwatches worn by 15 prison staff over a six-week period with a single-subject ABA research design involving two control phases and a mindfulnes…
Imperialism Ultimately Works for Us”
Although Rosa Luxemburg is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance, much of the current discussion of her work fails to contend with her commitment to a rather orthodox reading of the Marxist theory of history. This article argues that all of the features that make Luxemburg's work so attractive to contemporary scholars—her revolutionary radicalism, her accounts of spontaneity and democracy, and her critique of imperialism—are undergirded by her com…
The ends of radical critique? Crisis, capitalism, emancipation
In a discussion of Albena Azmanova’s book Capitalism on Edge (Columbia University Press, 2020), Amy Allen, Paul Apostolidis, Lea Ypi and Albena Azmanova debate key issues critical social theory confronts today. How should critical theorists re-engage with the critique of capitalism without entrapment in old ideological certainties? They revisit the classical debates about transformative agency, direction and methods of change, and the place of no…
Debating the dimensions
In this article Amy Allen, Rainer Forst and Isaac Reed debate the four dimensions of power, as framed by Mark Haugaard, in The Four Dimensions of Power, and Haugaard responds. This discussion involves the following: the relationship between agency and authority; ideology and acquiescence; power-over, power-to and power-with; structural constraint; bias and exclusion; the distinction between deep and shallow conflicts; the concept of reification; …

An Osteobiography of a 19th-Century Dog from Toronto, Canada
A 19th-century dog burial uncovered from a historical homelot in Toronto, Canada, provided a unique opportunity to reconstruct the individual's osteobiography. Of particular interest are the dog's very large size and a suite of skeletal pathologies. Recovery of a nearly complete skeleton combined with the use of X-rays and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) allowed for a discriminating differential diagnoses. Stable isotope analyses were applie…

The Normative and the Transcendental
Critique: Foucault and the Problems of Modernity 1 is an ambitious and exciting book that makes significant contributions to the now vast secondary literature on Foucault, and to the ongoing Foucault-Habermas "debate." Despite Foucault's enormous influence across multiple disciplines, his philosophical method, according to Koopman, has all too often been misunderstood not only by his harshest critics but also by his most ardent supporters. Hence,…
Power and reason, justice and domination
Through an email conversation between Allen, Forst and Haugaard, this article explores the relationship between the dyads power and reason, justice and domination. In much of the literature reason is considered either a mode of emancipation from power (Lukes) or, conversely, a subtle ruse of domination (Foucault). Here it is argued that reasoning is intrinsic to political power, with both the potential for power as justice (Arendt), and for power…
Feminism, Foucault, and the Critique of Reason
This paper situates Lynne Huffer’s recent queer-feminist Foucaultian critique of reason within the context of earlier feminist debates about reason and critically assesses Huffer’s work from the point of view of its faithfulness to Foucault’s work and its implications for feminism. I argue that Huffer’s characterization of Enlightenment reason as despotic not only departs from Foucault’s account of the relationship between power and reason, it al…

The Moon's Horses
So far as I know, the manuscripts' fraternis in Prop. 2. 34. 52 ‘aut cur fraternis Luna laboret equis’ has never been doubted. I offer an emendation of it in this note. Luna laboret ought to allude to lunar eclipse, but you cannot see it through the fog of fraternis equis . In C.Q.xliii (1949), 26–7, Shackleton Bailey dealt with the traditional claim for it, that the moon is eclipsed, not by the sun, by the presence of her brother's horses, but b…
The Relationship of Creativity and Intelligence in Irish Adolescents
S ummary . Kogan and Wallach have argued that the separate subtests of the Minnesota Tests of Creative Thinking probably share no more variance in common with each other than that which they also share with general intelligence. Madaus found only partial support for this hypothesis with an American high school sample. This study tests the hypothesis using a sample of Irish public grammar school pupils; the results of this study are virtually the …
