Raqqa
Al‐Raqqa is a town of modern Syria situated on the left bank of the Euphrates River. It was the site of a city during Antiquity and Late Antiquity. It gained in importance in the early Islamic period and first became the place of a garrison city called al‐Rāfiqa under the Abbasid caliph al‐Mansūr. Later on, during the reign of the Abbasid caliph Haār ū n al‐Rashīd, for about twelve years (796–808 ce ), al‐Raqqa became temporarily the capital of t…
Desert castles, Umayyad
The desert castles were rural aristocratic settlements belonging to the Umayyad caliphs and other elites of early Islamic Greater Syria. They were often situated in semi‐arid steppe land areas and were characterized by a palace or a residence surrounded by other structures. The desert castles mainly had a political and economic role, as places for exercising a form of mobile power, as places representing the new Islamic rule, and as profitable ag…
Old Buipe (Ghana, Northern Region): Some Observations on Islamization and Urban Development at the South-Western Margins of the dar al-islam
The state or kingdom of Gonja emerged in the mid-16th century in the savannah area extending to the north of the tropical forest in modern Ghana. Its origins seem to go back to the arrival of Mande conquerors who came from the area of Djenne to take control of the gold trade from the mines situated further south. Due to its geographical position, the kingdom essentially became a crossroads at the southern extremity of the sub-Saharan trade routes…

The Late Antique Church at Tall al-ʿUmayrī East: New Evidence for the Jafnid Family and the Cult of St. Sergius in Northern Jordan
The discovery of a new church inscription referring to the Jafnid (or “Ghassānid”) leader al-Mundhir in northern Jordan provides new insights into the activities of the family in the region and is a valuable addition to the epigraphic corpus concerning the Jafnids. The initial publication of the inscription in ADAJ, as part of the excavation report, was necessarily limited in its analytical scope. Here we take the opportunity to build on those in…

Desert castles, Umayyad
Desert castles is a generic name given to a series of aristocratic residences or palaces built during the Umayyad period (661–750 CE ) by the caliphs, their entourage, and the elites. The term does not accurately reflect the true nature of the different buildings; indeed, if a large part of them are effectively situated in steppe land areas, another part lies in areas that are less or not marginal.
Raqqa
Al‐Raqqa is a town of modern Syria situated on the left bank of the Euphrates River. It belongs to the western part of the Jazīra or northern Mesopotamia. Since the Hellenistic period, it was the site of a city called Kallinikos or, alternatively, Nikephorion, but it became much more important in the early Islamic period. In 639, the city was conquered by a Muslim army led by ‘Iyāḍ b. Ġanm after a short siege and the conclusion of a treaty.
Long-term management of water in the Central Levant: The Hawran case (Syria)
Apart from hydraulic systems linked to major rivers, the control of water in the Near East is exercised by exploitation of complementary seasonal resources: springs and temporary river floods. Southern Syria preserves many traces of this exploitation. The principal techniques of water catchment and storage were elaborated during the fourth millennium bc. The waterworks of the two following millennia constituted the basic and sustainable infrastru…
An Early Islamic Mosque in Palmyra
This article presents the results of preliminary investigations on a mosque that was recently rediscovered in the centre of Palmyra. The general organization of the mosque, the way in which it reuses a pre-existing Roman building, its situation south of the Tetrapylon and the data at hand on the later periods in Palmyra all point to an Umayyad date for the structure. This new element of early Islamic Palmyra will be described. This in turn will l…
Some Thoughts on Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi, its Dam, its Monastery and the Ghassanids
This article is intended as a revision of the pre-Islamic period at Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi, one of the most famous Umayyad “desert castles”, excavated during the 1930s. The date and interpretation of several structures will be discussed. It will be shown that the Harbaqa dam is more likely to be Umayyad than Roman. The tower and other structures pre-dating the palace will be interpreted as forming a single building of Byzantine date, very probabl…

The 'desert castles' are intriguing fortresses of early Islam. Here the author shows how the fort became a town, using new research from a key site in Syria
Al-Bakhra' (Avatha), from the Tetrarchic Fort to the Umayyad Castle
This article presents the results of archaeological and architectural survey and small-scale excavations at al-Bakhra', a late Roman and early Islamic site south of Palmyra. The site began as a Tetrarchic fort attributed to an auxilliary cavalry unit. During the Umayyad period the fort was modified and a huge extension delimited by a new enclosure wall was added. There are also numerous houses, funerary structures and hydraulic devices. The Umayy…
