Phlegmatic Landscapes: Perceptions of Wetlands, 'Acedia', and Complexion Theory in Selected Later Medieval Allegorical Pilgrim Narratives
Understanding medieval landscapes as sacred sites reveals underlying tensions in medieval thought between the placement of human beings outside of nature and a view that humans are in, and part of, the natural world. This article examines the relationship of landscape and human experience in late medieval allegorical dream visions of pilgrimage with particular attention to the descriptions of swamps or swamp-like environments and their effects. The article contrasts critiques of the Lynn White thesis as expressed in White's scholarly work ( Medieval Technology and Religion , Medieval Technology and Social Change ) with the far broader response to ‘Roots…

Controversy about Lynn White’s thesis that medieval Christianity is to blame for our current environmental crisis has done little to challenge the basic structure of White’s argument and has taken little account of recent work done by medieval scholars. White’s ecotheological critics, in particular, have often failed to come to grips with White’s position. In this paper, I question White’s reading of history on both interpretative and factual gro…
