Sentence repetition task for European Portuguese
The Sentence Repetition Task (SRT) is an assessment tool for children’s language abilities, which has been used in various languages and speaker types. The present study adapted the LITMUS-SRT to European Portuguese (EP) and applied it to 43 monolingual and 25 bilingual heritage speakers of EP with German as societal language (aged 6 to 10 years), in order to evaluate their knowledge of various syntactic properties, which differ in their level of…
An experimental study on the loss of VS order in monolingual and bilingual speakers of Brazilian Portuguese
This paper presents an experimental approach to subject inversion in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). We investigated the acceptability of SV and VS sentences by two groups of speakers: monolingually-raised and bilingual heritage speakers of BP, using acceptability judgment tasks to test the effect of verb type, definiteness and pragmatic context. Results confirm that BP lost VS order with the exception of unaccusative constructions. Both speaker group…
Virtual simulations of ancient sites inhabited by autonomous characters
In this paper, we report the learnings from the development of Easy-Population, a software tool for generation of autonomous populations in virtual simulations and its use in the creation of a 3D recreation of a historical site. In the process, we discuss the animation of virtual historical simulations inhabited by autonomous characters. We claim the incompleteness of these simulations in representing ancient places to conclude the necessity of f…
Efficient out-of-home activity recognition by complementing GPS data with semantic information
Smartphones have become an indispensable human device due to their increasing functionalities and decreasing prices. Their embedded sensors, including global positioning system (GPS), have opened opportunities to support human activity recognition, both indoor (in assisted living, for instance) and outdoor. This paper proposes a minimalist activity recognition model for out-of-home environments based on a smartphone. The only sensor used is GPS, …
The Role of Input Factors in the Lexical Development of European Portuguese as a Heritage Language in Portuguese–German Bilingual Speakers
In light of previous research on early bilingualism, this study investigates whether 6–11-year-old child heritage speakers (HSs) of European Portuguese (EP), living in Germany, show patterns of lexical development similar to those of monolingual EP children, both in terms of vocabulary size and of lexical composition. Moreover, it assesses the role of factors related to the quantity and quality of the input in the HSs’ lexical development in EP. …
Exposure Knowledge and Perception of Wireless Communication Technologies
The presented survey investigates risk and exposure perceptions of radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) associated with base stations, mobile phones and other sources, the key issue being the interaction between both sets of perceptions. The study is based on a cross-sectional design, and conducted with an online sample of 838 citizens from Portugal. The results indicate that respondents' intuitive exposure perception differs from the …
Assessing the Reliability of Retrospective Reports of Adverse Childhood Experiences among Adolescents with Documented Childhood Maltreatment
The literature suggests that childhood maltreatment is related to a higher probability of developing psychopathology and disease in adulthood. However, some authors have questioned the reliability of self-reports of maltreatment, suggesting that psychopathology at the time of evaluation affects self-reports. We evaluated the reliability of the self-reports of 79 young adults who were identified in childhood by Child Protective Services by compari…
