Participation in extracurricular activities and labor market outcomes of university graduates
Participation in extracurricular activities (ECA) during undergraduate studies is a crucial element of employability. However, there is limited knowledge about the relationship between ECA and graduates’ observable labor market outcomes. This study explores the relationship between participation in ECA and two main outcomes for Chilean university graduates: employment status and post-graduation earnings. The research draws on a 2024 survey involv…

Does free tuition impact academic performance of low-income undergraduate students? A response to Barroilhet, Silva and Quiroga
Academic Performance of Persistent University Students in Chile
Academic performance (GPA) is a fundamental factor in student success in college. Therefore, knowing the factors that influence it is important for universities. The objective of this research is to identify the determinants of university student academic performance during the first 3 years of its trajectory. The conclusions are based on data describing characteristics and behaviour of students who successfully completed three consecutive years …
Horizontal stratification of universities and precariousness of graduates working conditions
When one degree isn’t enough
Determinants of study motivation of undergraduate university students in Chile
Students’ academic motivation is a critical factor in understanding the choices that they make over the course of their educational careers. The purpose of this research is to identify the factors that determine students’ motivation to complete their undergraduate studies. Working with a sample of 2032 undergraduate students from 11 universities in Chile, an ordinal logistic regression model was constructed to estimate the effect of students’ soc…
The role of social capital in the job quality of Chilean university graduates
The over‐saturation of labour markets in some countries has led to a devaluation of university degrees and reshaped the factors determining employability for higher‐quality jobs. As a result, the social capital of graduates has emerged as an essential resource in addressing these challenges. This study examines the influence of social capital on the job quality of Chilean university graduates, distinguishing between first‐generation (FG) and cont…
Do universities contribute to reducing inequalities in the progression to postgraduate studies
Given the increasing devaluation of tertiary‐level qualifications, some university graduates have sought to enhance their employability by pursuing postgraduate studies. However, access to such opportunities remains influenced by their socioeconomic background. This study uses Bourdieu's concept of habitus to examine the role of the Chilean university system in access to postgraduate studies. By conceptualising graduates' social background as ind…
The effects of free tuition policy on university academic performance in Chile
In 2016 Chile initiated a policy of free tuition for students from families in the lower half of the income distribution to improve access to and completion of higher education. The empirical effectiveness of the policy has not yet been completely demonstrated. This study analysed the difference in levels of academic performance of students enrolled in 12 Chilean universities with and without free tuition. The study used a regression discontinuit…
Reasons for university dropout in Chile
Different universities for different students
In both Europe and the United States, the expansion of university education has led to a process of differentiation among universities based on their quality, prestige and student composition. The differences between the institutions tend to be associated with students’ background, but it is unclear to what extent their segmentation reflects broader patterns of social stratification. This study analyzes the segmentation of the Chilean university …
Factors contributing to the (un)fulfilment of employment aspirations of recent Chilean university graduates
The benefits of growth in university enrolments are contingent on the articulation of university expansion with changes in other areas, particularly the economy. The costs of a mismatch are felt at the societal level, but especially by individual graduates. This article describes problems faced by professionals in one country that has experienced very rapid expansion of higher education in a highly privatised market economy. While not uniformly g…
The impact of bank loans on university student retention
Purpose This study analyzed the impact on the persistence of Chilean university students who had received a government-guaranteed loan (CAE). Design/methodology/approach Using academic and administrative data from 2016 to 2019, provided by 11 Chilean universities, a discrete-time survival model was constructed. The model was based on data of 5,276 students in the 2016 cohort and included sociodemographic variables, academic background prior to en…

Why do students leave? Persistence in selective universities
In Chile many university students do not persist to graduation. Some students dropped out in the first year, others later. The objective of this study, based on students admitted to but not graduating from selective universities, was to identify factors associated with their academic success and length of persistence before withdrawal. The 707 subjects for the study were a non-probabilistic sample of two cohorts of students who had withdrawn from…
The effects of free tuition on the persistence of university students in Chile
Persisten conce…
Factors that affect post-graduation satisfaction of Chilean university students
Universities’ reputations are built in part on graduates’ assessments of the quality of education they received. What do these assessments tell us? Are graduates’ judgments of quality based on their experiences as students or on their later job satisfaction, that is, on process or on outcomes? The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which Chilean university graduates’ satisfaction with their professional training is associated wit…
Efecto del etiquetado de semáforo en el contenido nutricional y el consumo de bebidas gaseosas en Ecuador
No empirical evidence was found that implementation of traffic-light labeling changed soft-drink purchase habits in Ecuador, but there is evidence that it reduced sugar content in carbonated beverages in the country
Distribution of three SNPs related to low bone mineral density in amerindian groups and mestizos from Mexico
OBJECTIVES: Some Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of several candidate genes have been associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. As the genetic variability of such SNPs in Hispanic and Native American populations is scarce, we analyzed the three SNPs that have been related with bone mass disorders (Sp1, A163G, and BsmI) located in the genes of Type I Collagen (COL1A1), Osteoprotegerin (OPG), and Vitamin D receptor (V…
Genetic variation of the FMR1 gene among four Mexican populations
Fragile X syndrome is the most common cause of inherited mental retardation; it is caused by expansion of CGG repeats in the first exon of the FMR1 gene. The number of CGG repeats varies between 6 and 50 triplets in normal individuals; the most common alleles have 29 or 30 repeats. Allelic patterns in the global populations are similar; however; some reports show statistical differences among several populations. In Mexico, except by a single rep…
Characterization of mtDNA Haplogroups in 14 Mexican Indigenous Populations
In this descriptive study we investigated the genetic structure of 513 Mexican indigenous subjects grouped in 14 populations (Mixteca- Alta, Mixteca-Baja, Otomi, Purépecha, Tzeltal, Tarahumara, Huichol, Nahua- Atocpan, Nahua-Xochimilco, Nahua-Zitlala, Nahua-Chilacachapa, Nahua- Ixhuatlancillo, Nahua-Necoxtla, and Nahua-Coyolillo) based on mtDNA haplogroups. These communities are geographically and culturally isolated; parents and grandparents wer…
A globin gene haplotypes in Mexican Huichols
The haplotypes of 97 beta(A) independent chromosomes from a Mexican Huichol Native American group were analyzed. The analysis also included 87 beta(A) chromosomes from a Mexican Mestizo population previously studied. Among Huichols, eight different 5' beta haplotypes (5Hps) were observed, with types 1(+ - - - -), 13(+ + + - +) and 2(- + + - +) at frequencies of 0.794, 0.093, and 0.041, respectively. In Mestizos, 17 5Hps were found, types 1, 3(- +…
