  • Narrative of an Expedition to the Shores of the Arctic Sea in 1846 and 1847

Open Access•John Rae, John B Rae•BOOK•Narrative of an Expedition to the…•2013

In the mid-nineteenth century, the northern coastline of North America was of particular interest to the Hudson's Bay Company as it was believed to hold the key to the elusive North-West Passage, a trade route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Recruited to lead a team to survey part of this forbidding region, the Scottish explorer John Rae (1813–93) undertook his first expedition during 1846–7. It was remarkable not only for its success, but also…

    John B Rae•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1984

Since Dr. Staudenmaier has introduced his thoughtful and provocative paper by posing a question, I have felt it permissible to do likewise. I want to go back to the founding of our society and ask, What did we expect SHOT to wrought? I can speak only for myself; I think I have a pretty good idea of what was in the minds of all of those who were present twenty-five years ago, but I cannot presume to speak for them. Let me take the society first, b…

  • The Herbert Hoover Collection of Mining and Metallurgy

    John B Rae•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1980

Historians of technology have been well aware of the distinctive contribution made to their subject by President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover in providing the first good English translation of Georgius Agricola's De re metallica.1 It was a difficult and outstanding piece of scholarship: the fact that in over 300 years no one had been able to translate Agricola acceptably is sufficient evidence for that. When they undertook the task, the Hoovers natura…

    Open Access•John B Rae•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•1955•Cited by: 1

The processes whereby technical know-how is translated into business decisions are not widely understood; neither is there much definitive information about the role the engineer historically has played in administration. The data upon which this paper is based suggests that management of modern enterprise has been increasingly dependent upon graduates of engineering schools. The facts and implications are of interest not only to historians, but …
