Wanda Dynowska’s Educational Laboratory
The aim of this article is to present the educational activities of Wanda Dyn- owska (1888–1971) within the Tibetan refugee community in India during the initial period of its existence in exile. Dynowska, a now largely forgotten Polish theosophist and social activist, typically worked within cultural niches, focusing primarily on educational issues. In interwar Poland she was active in small theo- sophical communities, but she also directed her …
Swami Dayananda Sarasvati’s vision of Golden Vedic Age in contemporary Birla Mandirs
The article discusses the issues of contemporary Hindutva and its relationship with the ideas of Dayananda Sarasvati’s Golden Vedic Age, which are promoted not only in official publications but also symbolically in Hindu temples (Mandirs). The Birla family, founders of many temple complexes throughout India, propagated their own vision of modern Hinduism, in which Dayananda played a very significant role. His teachings and interpretation of Hindu…
Dieta jarska jako wyraz ekologicznej troski w dyskursie ezoterycznym przełomu XIX i XX wieku
The vegetarian diet was seen by esotericists at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the only diet fully compliant with the laws of Nature. Adopting it was therefore treated not only as a way of staying healthy (i.e. maintaining a psycho-physical and spiritual balance) and progressing spiritually, but also as a duty towards Nature and a way to preserve its original, pure and therefore beneficial character. The aim of this paper i…
“A Free Godlike Soul”
The aim of the paper is a preliminary presentation of previously unpublished letters of the Polish philosopher and social activist Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954) to William James (1842–1910), offering some insight into the relationship between the two thinkers. In this friendship, which lasted almost 17 years and was based mainly on exchanging correspondence, Lutosławski, known for his love of writing letters, was more active and effusive. The …
Ekam sad viprā basathudhā vadanti' - inclusivism - the idea of a reformed Hinduism in the iconographic program of the Birla temples
The fundraising activity initiated by the Birla family in India resulted in the construction of more than 20 Hindu temples, commonly referred to as the Birla Mandirs. Although they vary in terms of architectural forms and iconographic programs it seems, that one basic and common theme remains - to show reformed Hinduism as a religion that is the pillar of the identity of the people of New India. It is understood at the same time as separate but a…
"Christianity as the Basis of Wincenty Lutosławski's "Polish Yoga
The article is an attempt to show the importance of Christianity in the reinterpretation of the Indian yoga tradition, in order to include it in a new (Polish) cultural context. Christianity allowed transformation of this culturally alien concept in such a way that it ceased to be seen as something foreign and exotic, and started to be treated as a Polish discipline -in a way specifically addressing the needs and conditions of the Polish nation. …
From Rāmacharaka's "Standard of the Normal Man" to Lutosławski's Strategy of National Revival
The aim of the article is to present how Rāmacharaka's vision of yoga fits with the initial stage of yoga adaptation in Poland. The focus lays on the fact how elements of Rāmacharaka's yoga were used by Wincenty Lutosławski in his system of yoga, described as "the development of the power of will". It may be assumed that it was Lutosławski's activity, who not only wrote the first Polish yoga textbook but was also deeply involved in promoting his …
