  • On Prepositional-Case Constructions in Urban Micro-toponymy / Ergonymy

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2025

This paper discusses Russian prepositional-case constructions “U NGen” (‘At N’sGen’, e.g., U Palycha ‘At Palych’s’) with ‘guest’ semantics in ergonymy and microurbanonymy. It also looks at when such onym forms emerged in the Russian language. While they were still in everyday use in the mid-20th century, they became more firmly established in the official ergonymicon in the 1990s. The author suggests that these names are rooted in everyday Russia…

  • Forum 66

Andrey Adelfinskiy, Maria Akhmetova et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologicheskij forum•2025

Every era has its own “mainstream scholarly style” — the generally accepted way of writing academic texts in а given era and place. To today’s tastes, many academic texts written a century and more ago seem verbose and impersonal, weighed down with dispensable reflections and ruminations. Soviet academic style was radically different from English-language publications of the time, but these days many Russian academic texts read like translations …

  • On a dramaturgical marginalium of the 1920s

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Shagi / Steps•2023

The paper analyzes anonymous handwritten corrections in a copy of a propagandist play, “Darkness” (T’ma, 1927), by T. M. Martynov. The author suggests that the anonymous editor worked in the Nizhny Novgorod Krai’s Department of Public Education (Nizhkraiono), which was responsible for overseeing theatrical work. The author distinguishes factographic, stylistic and ideological emendations. The latter include the elimination of derogatory remarks a…

  • Unofficial Monumentonyms

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2022

The paper is devoted to unofficial names of monuments and urban sculpture, or unofficial monumentonyms. The author discusses their usage in field interviews, popular media, Internet discussions, excursions, in texts on local history, and in dictionaries. Particular attention is paid to the aspect of variability of these names. The proposed comparative model for describing their “morphology” suggests the invariance of a monument’s subject (that is…

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Shagi / Steps•2021

  • “A Town with Two Names”

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2021

The article uses the example of the town of Engels (Saratov Region) to explore the case of duplicate naming in the local usage, i.e. the use of the historical oikonym Pokrovsk (until 1931) and its derivatives along with the official name of the town or instead of it. The author showcases that in the local speech, the historical name of the town has become a living alternative used in almost every sphere except business and documentation. At the s…

  • On the Revival of One Ancient Russian Katoikonym

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2019

В статье рассматриваются колебания в употреблении названий жителей Старой Руссы в местной печати с кон. XIX до нач. XXI в.

  • “Marginal” Katoikonyms

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova, Maria V Akhmetova•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2017

The paper discusses peripheral, or “marginal” katoikonyms (names of city inhabitants). Such names are formed either spontaneously, using productive formants, or following a pattern unusual for katoykonims, e.g. using wordplay (the way of name formation chiefl y depends on the nominator’s intentions). Along with occasional katoikonyms, whose use can be explained by the nominator’s ignorance of the traditional variants of names, the author distingu…

  • Knowledge, Science, and the Scientist in Contemporary Mythology

    Open Access•Maria Akhmetova•ARTICLE•FOLKLORICA - Journal of the…•2010

When a researcher turns to contemporary mythology she or he probably encounters the problem of whether it is legitimate to describe any contemporary cultural phenomena as mythological. We can talk about this concept only if we first transcend the strict boundaries of the term "mythology." This term means a system of beliefs predating the rational and logic worldview, one that was characteristic of an archaic society. If this system has managed to…
