  • Becoming invisible

    Warren S Smith, Warren Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 30

This speculative essay examines ‘invisible’ social identities and the processes by which they are manifested and occasionally sought. Using various literary and academic sources, and loosely informed by an unlikely combination of Stoic philosophy and post-structuralist politics, we argue that invisibility is conventionally viewed as undesirable or ‘suffered’ by individuals or groups that are disadvantaged or marginalised within society. Whilst ap…

The development of critical management studies (CMS) has been marked by much internal debate. There are disagreements over its objectives and methods, and also in providing a positive sense as to what it should be for. Differences exist between a strategy of engagement with management and a radical approach that, fearing co-option, disengages from established practices. But both these strategies are influenced by CMS's situation and participation…

  • Organizing Death

    Open Access•Warren S Smith, Warren Smith•ARTICLE•Organization•2006•Cited by: 8•References: 11

Much writing on death contrasts its existential significance with our strategies of avoidance. These strategies, it is argued, are manifested in the practices and institutions of modern life and have led to the sequestration of death. This is felt to have separated us from something vital, a belief that seems to, implicitly or explicitly, rest upon claims of (lost) authenticity. But this seems a rather cool account that somewhat conveniently disp…

  • Postmodernism and Popularisation

Warren S Smith, Warren Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2003•References: 7

Popular accounts of science have helped to stimulate greater public interest in the role of science in contemporary society. For example, chaos theory and complexity theory have proven to be highly marketable science "products". These concepts have increasingly travelled into wider culture and, notably, the study of organization. Through an interpretation that promotes a leaning towards uncertainty, unpredictability and ambiguity, these accounts …

A new chromophoric low molecular weight (LMW) organic molecule, 1, was synthesized, and it forms gels in various organic solvents including toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene. The resultant gel phase materials exhibit enhanced and red-shifted fluorescence emission in the respective gelling solvents. This gelator molecule is self-assembled using various noncovalent interactions including hydrogen bonding, pi-pi staking and van der Waals inte…

  • The sense of violence and the absence of consolation

Warren S Smith, Warren Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Cultures Organizations…•2001

The paper is an attempt to engage with our contemplations of violence and the failure of familiar explanations to capture these contemplations. We begin our explorations of these familiar accounts by examining contemporary debates on media violence but find these problematic. By reducing media violence to mere spectacle or, on the contrary, by seeing such violence as desensitising and destructive, the various positions in the debates deprive viol…
