  • Uso e interpretación de algunos conceptos peirceanos en la semiótica del texto de Umberto Eco

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•deSignis•2025

Eco’s Lector in fabula (1978) discusses Peirce’s theory of signs and projects it onto some problems of textual semiotics. Eco reconstructs Peirce’s theory of “meaning” through a series of “interpretive wanderings” throughout the Collected Papers. According to Eco, the immediate object is the way in which the dynamic object is focused, this way being the ground or meaning; furthermore, ground, meaning and interpretant are in fact the same thing. I…

  • Rhemata

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•The Southern Journal of Philosophy•2023

The article offers an analysis of Peirce's notion of “rhema.” It examines and explains Peirce's definition of the rhema; it identifies and solves two problems that are direct consequences of the definition. The first problem is that proper names, while classified as rhemata, do not satisfy Peirce's definition of the rhema. The second problem is that Peirce also calls “rhemata” the results of propositional analysis that however do not satisfy his …

  • Frege

Open Access•Francesco Bellucci, Daniele Chiffi et al.•ARTICLE•Theoria•2023

In Die Grundgesetze der Arithmetik (I, §48), Frege introduces his rule of the fusion of horizontals, according to which if an occurrence of the horizontal stroke is followed by another occurrence of the same stroke, either in isolation or “contained” in a propositional connective, the two occurrences can be fused with each other. However, the role of this rule, and of the horizontal sign more generally, is controversial; Michael Dummett notorious…

  • Pragmatism and Logic

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2023•References: 2

The paper seeks to explain in what sense pragmatism was for Peirce a doctrine of logic. It is argued that pragmatism is a doctrine of logic for Peirce because its maxim, the pragmatic maxim, is a maxim of the methodeutic of abduction, i.e., concerns the method of selecting hypotheses for experimental testing. The paper also connects this idea to Peirce’s 1913 thesis according to which pragmatism contributes to the security but not to the uberty o…

  • A Novel Ex Vivo Approach Based on Proteomics and Biomarkers to Evaluate the Effects of Chrysene, Mehp, and PBDE-47 on Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta)

Open Access•Laura Bianchi, Simone Casini et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The principal aim of the present study was to develop and apply novel ex vivo tests as an alternative to cell cultures able to evaluate the possible effects of emerging and legacy contaminants in Caretta caretta . To this end, we performed ex vivo experiments on non-invasively collected whole-blood and skin-biopsy slices treated with chrysene, MEHP, or PBDE-47. Blood samples were tested by oxidative stress (TAS), immune system (respiratory burst,…

  • Peirce on Symbols

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Archiv für Geschichte der…•2021

The goal of this paper is a reassessment of Peirce’s doctrine of symbol. The paper discusses a common reading of Peirce’s doctrine, according to which all and only symbols are conventional signs. Against this reading, it is argued that neither are all Peircean symbols conventional, nor are all conventional signs Peircean symbols. Rather, a Peircean symbol is a general sign, i. e. , a sign that represents a general object

  • An analysis of Existential Graphs–part 2

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci, Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen•ARTICLE•Synthese•2021•References: 23

This paper provides an analysis of the notational difference between Beta Existential Graphs, the graphical notation for quantificational logic invented by Charles S. Peirce at the end of the 19th century, and the ordinary notation of first-order logic. Peirce thought his graphs to be “more diagrammatic” than equivalently expressive languages (including his own algebras) for quantificational logic. The reason of this, he claimed, is that less roo…

  • Peirce on assertion and other speech acts

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2019•References: 9

This paper offers a selective but reasonably representative reconstruction of the evolution of Peirce’s “speech acts theory” across different, consecutive versions of speculative grammar. It examines Peirce’s pre-1903 theory of assertion, the Syllabus (1903) and “Καινὰ στοιχεῖα” (c. 1904), and reconstructs Peirce’s speech-act-oriented semiotic classifications after 1904

  • Eco and Peirce on Abduction

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•European Journal of Pragmatism…•2018•Cited by: 5

This paper argues that Umberto Eco had a sophisticated theory of abductive reasoning and that this theory is fundamentally akin to Peirce’s both in the analysis and in the justification of this kind of reasoning. The first section expounds the essentials of Peirce’s theory of abduction, and explains how Peirce moved from seeing abduction as a kind of reasoning to seeing it as a stage of the larger process of inquiry. The second section deals with…

  • Peirce, philosophe du langage

    Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Cahiers philosophiques•2017

  • From Mitchell to Carus

Francesco Bellucci, Francesco Bellucci Francesco Bellucci et al.•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Charles S…•2016•Cited by: 3

  • Inferences from Signs

Francesco Bellucci, Francesco Bellucci Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Charles S…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In this article I connect Peirce’s early logi- co-semiotic investigations (1865-1867) to the doctrine of sign-inference presented by Aristotle in the Prior Analytics. In section III I argue that An. Pr. II.27 showed Peirce the possibility of a syllogistic reconstruction of non-syllogistic inferences, and taught him (i) to consider the premises of an argument as affording a σημεĩον or sign of the conclusion, and (ii) to consider the three syllo- g…

  • Exploring Peirce’s speculative grammar

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The paper argues against what I call the “Fregean interpretation” of Peirce’s distinction between the immediate and the dynamic object of a sign, according to which Peirce’s dynamic object is akin to Frege’s Bedeutung, while Peirce’s immediate object is akin to Frege’s Sinn. After having exposed the Fregean interpretation, I briefly reconstruct the genesis of Peirce’s notion of immediate object in his semiotic writings of the years 1904–1909 and …

  • Logic, Psychology, and Apperception

Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2015

Since his first writings, C. S. Peirce defended an unpsychological approach to logic. His authority was J. F. Herbart, who in his Lehrbuch zur Einleitung in die Philosophie had affirmed that “in logic it is necessary to ignore everything that is psychological.” This would become a standard reference for Peirce’s philosophy of logic. Moreover, it was from Herbart’s conception of apperception that Peirce inherited the “synechistic” law of mind firs…

  • Peirce, Leibniz, and the threshold of pragmatism

    Open Access•Francesco Bellucci•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

This paper discusses the relation between Leibniz's and Peirce's semiotics, especially derived from some of Peirce's unpublished manuscripts, and briefly resumes Leibniz's role in Peirce's scientific and philosophical development. It is argued that not only did Peirce consider Leibniz a great philosopher, but he also regarded him as a pioneer of semiotics

  • Peirce's Continuous Predicates

Francesco Bellucci, Bellucci Bellucci•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Charles S…•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Around 1906, Peirce discovered that the logical analysis of a proposition comes to an end when a “continuous predicate” is found. Continuous predicates are those predicates that cannot be analyzed, or, which is the same, are only analyzable into parts all homogeneous with the whole. This paper examines Peirce’s concept of continuous predicate and its relevance to his theory of logical analysis
