  • Entanglement and feminist agency in picture books

    Hadar Netz, Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 14

How are gender ideologies encoded in children’s picture books recommended as non-sexist? Previous research indicates that fully reversing gender roles and creating a gender-egalitarian universe of discourse might be an unrealistic authorial endeavour. In the current study, we examine a different kind of enterprise. Having identified a group of picture books to investigate, which we define as anti-sexist (rather than non-sexist), we apply the voca…

  • Word order and discourse functions in spoken Hebrew

Hadar Netz, Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2011

In this article we discuss the discourse functions of the alternative linearizations of Spoken Hebrew sentences, as reflected in the possessive sentence pattern. We begin by presenting the available variants of possessive sentences in Hebrew. Next, we address the issue of markedness in our discussion of the discourse functions of the different word orders. The discourse functions demonstrated are contrast, parallelism, side-sequencing, emotive an…

  • The subversive agent

    Open Access•Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2011•References: 1

The first part of the paper is dedicated to a theoretical discussion of the Western individual, the Althusserian subject and its more active counterpart, the agent. The agent is endowed with a logic that is not fully predictable and can be creative, in which case it may become subversive. The second part of the article is devoted to an application of the theoretical framework to a case in Israeli culture. The organization da'at emet attempts to a…

  • A Jewish and democratic state

    Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The two Palestinian uprisings have brought about an ideological shift in Israel’s view of the solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The time has ripened for an open debate about ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Occupied Territories. The debate has limited discursive boundaries, set up by the catch phrase “a Jewish and democratic state”. This article discusses some points of view within this discourse and exemplifies those …

  • The term return in the Palestinian discourse on the Right of Return

    Open Access•Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The term return is used in the English texts of contemporary Palestinian political authors writing on the Right of Return of Palestinians to their homes and homeland. The first part of this article is dedicated to a semantic analysis of return as a radial category with a core meaning and extensions. The meanings of return in these texts as used in the discourse of Palestinian maximalists versus pragmatists are then discussed. It is shown that: (1…

  • My face is paling against my will

    Open Access•Yael Kidron, Ron Kuzar•ARTICLE•Pragmatics & Cognition•2002

Various syntactical forms may be used for presenting an emotional event. The choice of a grammatical form may be related to cultural, social and personal attitudes towards the nature of emotions. One of the cases in which the consistency of choices is evident is the description of bodily changes during an emotional event. In one possible syntactic style, the human experiencer is in the center of attention when a somatic change takes place, or the…

  • Hebrew and Zionism

    Ron Kuzar•BOOK•Hebrew and Zionism•2001

This book observes and critiques controversies on the genesis and the character of Israeli Hebrew. Did it emerge through revival? Did Ben-Yehuda play a role in it? Is Hebrew a normal language now? The hegemonic ideology of the revival of Hebrew is shown to have been harmonious with various Zionist streams, as well as with its rival, Canaanism. The effects of revivalism are evaluated, and an argument is made in favor of non-revivalist alternatives…
