Wisdom Tooth Formation as a Method of Estimating Age in a New Zealand Population
Dental ageing relies on assumptions aboutthe progression of tooth development from the middletrimester to adulthood and relative stability of thisprocess in the face of adverse dietary, hormonal, diseaseor nutritional factors. Most studies of dental ageingemploy the method of Demirjian et al., (1973), which isbased upon an assessment of crown and root formationstages from dental radiographs. Unfortunately, thismethod has a ceiling effect at age 1…
Validation of the Intuitive Eating Scale in pregnancy
The objective of this study was to examine the content validity and test-retest reliability of the Intuitive Eating Scale among pregnant women. A qualitative think-aloud study of the Intuitive Eating Scale analysed the content validity. Overall, the Intuitive Eating Scale made sense to pregnant women, but food safety affected the interpretation of some items. A version with instructions modified accounting for food safety, the Intuitive Eating Sc…
Do different types of financial support after illness or injury affect socio-economic outcomes? A natural experiment in New Zealand
What is spirituality? Evidence from a New Zealand hospice study
Spirituality is increasingly understood to be important in healthcare provision, as seen in policy, guidelines and practice across many Western healthcare systems. Definitions of spirituality remain controversial, despite their importance for consistency in research and practice. This paper reports on the definition findings of a nation-wide New Zealand (NZ) study (2006–2008) that examined understandings, experiences and ways to improve spiritual…
Medicalisation or under-treatment? Psychotropic medication use by elderly people in New Zealand
The increased use of information technology in health care allows researchers to generate data on rates of medication use among population groups, raising questions as to whether these rates are too high or too low. This paper presents findings from a study of records of all prescription medication dispensed in one New Zealand region (Te Tāirawhiti) over a one year period. The study examined patterns of psychotropic medication use amongst older p…
The Participation Divide? Political Participation, Trust in Government, and E‐government in Australia and New Zealand
Drawing on 438 telephone interview surveys in Australia and 500 in New Zealand, we find evidence of a ‘participation divide’ where those participating in politics do so using a range of means, including electronic ones. Those less likely to participate in politics, are less likely to participate across all means measured. Those with higher levels of education and income and of European ethnicity are more likely to participate. We confirm the exis…
The false and the true bifid condyles
The Polynesian chin and mandible
We noted the similarity in mandibular profile between a 27,000-year-old skull from China and a 160-year-old Polynesian skull. Both had a more vertical ramus, a curved inferior border, and no chin. The European mandible has a greater gonial angle, an antegonial notch, and a chin. Is the presence of a chin sufficient to distinguish European mandible from Polynesian? Can the gonial angle and ramus shape do so? A blind study of fifty mandibles of bot…
Advanced dental maturation in New Zealand Maori and Pacific Island children
This study employs Demirjian's (1994: CD Rom. Norwood, MA: Silver Platter Education) method for assessing dental maturation to compare the rates of development in children of three ethnic populations living in New Zealand-Maori, Pacific Island, and European. We test the hypothesis that Maori and Pacific Island children will have significantly advanced dental maturation compared with New Zealand children of European extraction. The study populatio…
Vitamin and mineral supplements in pregnancy and the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia
Our own study, of similar size to the Australian study, does not support the hypothesis of a protective effect of folate on childhood ALL. Neither do the findings of the meta-analysis
The Incidence and Expression of the Subcondylar Tubercle of the Mandible in Early Polynesians, Modern Indians and Modern Europeans
A sample of pre-European Polynesian and Melanesian mandibles, modern Asian Indians and cadaveric European mandibles were investigated to establish the prevalence of a subcondylar tubercle and to attempt to relate its presence to mandibular function. Among the three population samples, the subcondylar tubercle appeared 1.5 times more frequently among the Polynesians/Melanesians, than either the Indian or European groups. It was fairly equally pres…

Periapical lesions and dental wear in the early Maori
Dental wear and intrabony lesions were evaluated in a sample of 225 skulls (136 male) of pre-contact New Zealand Maoris. The degree and direction of surface wear was scored according to the method of Molnar (Molnar 1971. Human tooth wear, tooth function and cultural variability. American Journal of Physical Anthropology34: 175–190) and revealed severe surface loss in both males and females with horizontal wear being the dominant pattern (62.4% ma…
Patterns of dental wear in the early Maori dentition
The levels of tooth wear were surveyed in 50 pre‐contact Maori skulls (23 of them female) from New Zealand. In addition to a generalized tooth wear index, we evaluated occlusal wear for erosion and abrasion. Occlusal microwear was also investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and, finally, the occlusal slope was determined at the level of the first molar teeth. The general pattern of wear was one of severe occlusal reduction w…

Sexual abstinence at age 21 in New Zealand
First sexual intercourse
Objectives: To investigate how age at first sexual intercourse is related to the reported circumstances and to determine how these corresponded to views in early adulthood about its timing. Design: Cross sectional study within a birth cohort using a questionnaire presented by computer. Setting: Dunedin, New Zealand in 1993-4. Subjects: 477 men and 458 women enrolled in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, comprising 92% of …
