Gender Norms and the Implementation of Social Protection
Social protection is increasingly used as an instrument for promoting gender equality. However, there is limited evidence on how the implementation of social protection programmes affects the achievement of gender equality objectives, particularly how gender norms shape implementers’ perceptions and their interpretation and translation of gender design features. This study analyses the role of gender norms in shaping the implementation of the Pro…
The impacts of integrating microfinance with agricultural extension on seasonal food insecurity
Neither microfinance alone nor bundled with agricultural extension reduces food insecurity. • Dietary diversity fell during harvest and lean seasons in the bundled group. • Rigid loan repayment misaligns with agricultural cash flows, limiting program synergies. We study the impact of bundling microfinance with farming extension services on seasonal food security in rural Uganda. Using an experimental design, we monitor seasonal changes through a …
Post-intervention gendered impacts and moderating factors of a government cash plus intervention for adolescents in Tanzania
While external factors such as lengthy delays of cash transfer payments to adolescents' households and the COVID-19 pandemic may have mitigated the potential for sustained impacts of this intervention, findings suggest that future programs may need to provide different combinations of programming, provide support longer-term, or intervene at more levels of the social ecological model to influence many of the outcomes examined and to effect more l…
Early life exposure to climate shocks and the protective role of cash transfers
Effective Knowledge Transmission and Learning in Agriculture
In this article, we discuss a study to identify an effective agricultural knowledge transfer channel for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, using a randomised training experiment together with focus group discussions, key informant interviews and a survey. We also examine the factors that determine learning among smallholder farmers. Our results revealed that involving extension agents and model farmers leads to above-average knowledge transfer. Ho…
The Impact of Agricultural Extension Service on the Uptake of Various Agricultural Technologies in Ethiopia
Many governments provide a free agricultural extension service that aims to link farmers to scientific knowledge and yield-enhancing technologies. However, the impact of this service in achieving its aim has been unclear. This study focuses on Ethiopia to explore the impact of the agricultural extension service on farmers’ utilisation of various agricultural technologies. Using a large and representative data set, the study applies an instrumenta…
Overconfidence, Trust, and Information-Seeking among Smallholder Farmers
We investigate the role of overconfidence and trust in farmers’ information-seeking behavior using a lab-in-the-field experiment in Ethiopia. Our results show that overconfidence is widespread among farmers in our sample, predicts less information-seeking, and is associated with an efficiency loss. Moreover, we find that farmers tend to seek more information from extension agents than from peer farmers and that information-seeking increases when …
The effect of siblings’ sex ratio on physical capital, human capital, and gendered time use among adolescents in Ethiopia
We examine the role of siblings' sex ratio on adolescents' physical and human capital development, as well as gendered time allocation using data from the Young Lives project in Ethiopia. We use BMI-for-age and Weight-for-age to measure physical capital and grade attainment and scores in Mathematics and English tests as human capital indicators. Gendered time use is proxied by the hours per day the adolescent spends doing traditionally female-spe…
Risk factors of adolescent exposure to violence in Burkina Faso
These gender-specific findings highlight the importance of family background characteristics and can be used to inform and strengthen the targeting of vulnerable children and adolescents in interventions aimed at reducing exposure to violence against children
