Gender at the periphery: Climate finance, renewable energy, and the limits of technocratic inclusion in Indonesia
Indonesia’s renewable energy transition is mobilising billions in climate finance and projecting 1.7 million new jobs under the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL 2025-2034). Gender equality is present in this architecture but incorporated into technocratic governance in ways that empty it of transformative content and reproduce the inequalities it nominally addresses. Three structural problems explain this. First, the privileging of bankabl…

Arte, agência e efeitos de poder em Timor-Leste
A Contingent Agency: Gembel and the Print-Making Project
Timor-Leste's Independence has offered a new site of expression for "resilient" power relations established during the clandestine movement. However, within this new site, there have been fractures and splinters as Timorese try to stake a claim on power and belonging. Young Timorese involved in the Gembel art collective have managed to forge a new habitus - a space in which they can exercise a degree of agency to reclaim their youth identity thro…

Engaging Processes of Sense-Making and Negotiation in Contemporary Timor-Leste
The articles in this special issue build on past ethnographic inquiries and focus on \npolitical and social change since Timor-Leste \nindependence. One of the things we \nhave found particularly exciting about researching post-independent Timor-Leste has \nbeen to carry out fieldwork in a context where not just researchers, but also our \ninformants, are caught up in processes of \nsense-making of determining what kind \nof place Timor-Leste as …
Consuming Youth: Timorese in the Resistance Against Indonesian Occupation
This article explores the role played by risk-seeking Timorese youth, known as the New Generation (Geraçao Foun), in the resistance movement against Indonesian occupation (1975–1999). It discusses the capture, regimentation and marginalisation of youthful radicalism by the national resistance movement. The paper looks at these processes of youth revolutionary involvement sympathetically though the memories of former participants in the clandestin…

Performing Politics: The 2007 Parliamentary Elections in Timor Leste
The 2007 national parliamentary elections in East Timor attracted high voter participation and was widely and favourably reported, but when the successful poll flared into violent post-election conflict, the possibility of realising political stability and national unity is again called into question. Despite the emergence of new political parties and a growing population of young aspirational Timorese voters who are shifting the grounds of polit…
Introduction: The Power of Vision and Voice
The ways in which film and photographic mediums can be incorporated within ethnography is a continuing challenge for anthropologists. The papers within this special focus on visual anthropology provide different examples of the inclusion of visual components in ethnography from current research at the Australian National University. The visual can be used as a process of enquiry during different phases of anthropological research: as a research t…
Seeing, Hearing and Feeling Belonging: The Case of East Timorese Youth
This paper explores the politics of belonging for a young generation of East Timorese, known as the Geração Foun (Tetum, young/new generation), illustrated through the eyes of Osme, a youth who is wrestling to find his place in independent East Timor from afar, in Australia. Through a range of bodily engaged phenomena such as singing and performance I came to understand the affective experiences of young Timorese ‘being in the world’ but was chal…
