  • Calibrating home, hospitality and reciprocity in migration

    Open Access•Nicholas Demaria Harney, P Boccagni•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2023•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Hospitality, as an analytic and a lived experience, is central to the day-to-day workings of home, and to managing the tensions and contradictions inherent in place attachment and appropriation on any scale - from the domestic to the national one. This emerges as a contentious and yet under-researched social question whenever newcomers such as immigrants and refugees lay some claim for guesthood. Following this premise, and based also on our fiel…

  • Interculturalism, Inequality and Hospitality in Italy

    Nicholas Demaria Harney•ARTICLE•Ethnos•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 44

In this article, I address the challenges of interculturalist policy in practice as its enactment becomes entangled with local idioms of hospitality and interpretations of time in migrant encounters that undermine the co-evalness that is necessary for intercultural communication. In Campania, transport workers in a pilot project focused on improving relationships with Italian and migrant riders but inevitably anticipated certain kinds of migrants…

  • Shadow Work (Ivan Illich)

    Open Access•Nicholas Demaria Harney•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2018

Shadow Work (1981), written by the polymath ex‐catholic priest Ivan Illich (1926–2002), critiques what Illich sees as the contrived structures of desire present in modern commodity‐intensive society. Shadow work is the “unpaid servitude” modern people tolerate to satisfy the desires experts suggest they need. Shadow Work extends Illich's earlier critiques of the way institutions and professions in the modern industrialized world dehumanize by cre…

  • Temporalities of migration and reflexive ethnography

    Nicholas Demaria Harney, Nicholas Harney•ARTICLE•MONDI MIGRANTI•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 18

Purpose Naples, Italy in the last decade has become a destination for Ukrainian migrants escaping the economic uncertainty of their homeland. A sign of the city's importance in the diaspora is that the Ukrainian government in 2008 opened a local consulate. Estimates are that nearly a million Ukrainians have used Italy as a point of labour transit, even if only a fifth of those are formally registered. The purpose of this paper is to examine the s…

  • Neoliberal restructuring and multicultural legacies

    Nicholas Demaria Harney•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 18

In this article, I address the impact of neoliberalism and the attendant techniques of financialization on multiculturalism in Canada through ethnographic research at a non-profit, multicultural heritage institution. I consider how the workers at this non-profit maintained their solidaristic, pre-neoliberal conception of multiculturalism even as they experimented with a sociality dominated by market exchange. Even as worker subjectivity was trans…

  • Tracking Transnationalism

    Nicholas Demaria Harney, L Baldassar•ARTICLE•New Community•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 13

In this introduction to the special issue we argue that a reconsideration of the notion of ‘migrancy’ can add greater emphasis to a particular methodological terrain within the burgeoning literature on transnationalism. The legacy of anthropological work on migrancy in southern Africa and the more recent use of the term as a trope in the ‘postmodern’ world by academics in cultural studies raise three intertwined features of a migrancy perspective…

  • Transnationalism and Entrepreneurial Migrancy in Naples, Italy

    Nicholas Demaria Harney•ARTICLE•New Community•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 7

This article examines the conceptual limitations in the current literature about transnational migration, which tends to focus on forms of state control or the new ways offered by technological innovation for migrant subjects to maintain connections with their places of origin. Through ethnographic fieldwork in Naples, Italy, this article reconsiders how the concept of migrancy might force us to linger further over the actor's perspective in migr…

  • The Politics of Urban Space

    Open Access•Nicholas Demaria Harney•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2006

This paper examines the politics of urban space through a consideration of three ways Italians in Toronto, Canada, create, make claims to and express their belonging in particular neighbourhoods in the city. The article considers forms of claiming and colonizing space that are not overtly violent or confrontational with respect to other groups living within the plural city but, in effect, are assertions of power over particular places with which …

  • The Alternative Economies of Emigration and Immigration, the Real and the Constitution of Italian Nation Spaces

    Nicholas Demaria Harney•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 9

In this paper I consider how we might interpret the implications of the coincidence of emigration and immigration in Italy. Some scholars have situated Italy's population changes in the past 30 years within the framework of the ‘Mediterranean model of Migration’. Although this model offers a general picture of the structural features in common among ‘Mediterranean’ countries, it assumes the existence of the nation rather than questioning its very…

Purpose This paper aims to consider the use of rumour by Bangladeshi migrant entrepreneurs in Naples, Italy to comment on informal economic practices and migrant moral hierarchies present in that city. Design/methodology/approach It is based on ethnographic fieldwork among migrants conducted by the author in the Naples region in 2004 and 2005. • Building Italian Regional Identity in Toronto

Open Access•Nicholas Demaria Harney, Nicholas Harney•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2002•Cited by: 4

The landscape of greater Toronto is dotted with Italian ethnoregional community centres constructed with financial and diplomatic help from Italian regional governments. These eth noregional centres are physical representations of Italian Canadi anness and used by Italian Canadians to create meaningful spaces, to generate collective sentiment and locate themselves in the land of immigration. The ethnographic examples used in this paper, I suggest…

But is a soccer tournament all that almost a half-million Italians in Toronto have in common? What does it mean to be Italian in Toronto? In this book Nicholas DeMaria Harney invites us to explore with him the symbols and sites of Italian culture in Toronto.
