  • Lehren aus der Niederlage

    Dietrich Beyrau•ARTICLE•Osteuropa•2023

Russia has a long history of wars. Despite the alternation between defeats and victories, Russia’s territorial expansion seemed almost like a law of nature to contemporaries and historians alike. The First World War ended in defeat for Russia. Under its pressure, the Tsarist empire fell apart. The new elites and the population reacted differently to the experience of war and defeat: desertion and the militarisation of the economy, society, and cu…

  • Im Kreislauf der Geschichte

    Dietrich Beyrau•ARTICLE•Osteuropa•2021

The Putin regime is expanding its power, suppressing opposition and society’s autonomy. The situation is reminiscent of earlier eras. Andrei Sakharov and Alexei Naval’nyi, their reference to law, yesterday’s Chronicle of Current Events, and today’s social media with its documentary power are parallels. It seems that Russia’s historical development is caught in a cycle. Society’s considerable creativity and mobilizing power faces the leadership’s …

Jan Křen was among the eastern-central European thinkers who overcame the division of Europe with the power of the powerless. His main interest was historical truth. He studied civilian resistance against National Socialism, which according to the ruling doctrine of the Communist Party did not even exist. One topics of his research was the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia, which he refused to justify as being a matter of necessity. An…

In the case of Russia, the existence of a relationship between lost war, revolution, and Civil War is obvious. Unlike the German case, however, it has not been investigated in any detail. The Great War is often seen as the ‘forgotten war’ in the shadow of the Revolution of 1917 and the Civil War of 1918–21. Inspired by George Mosse’s work on Germany, this article investigates the connections between these conflicts. It argues that it is not easy …

  • Der Erste Weltkrieg als Bewährungsprobe. Bolschewistische Lernprozesse aus dem «imperialistischen» Krieg

    Open Access•Dietrich Beyrau•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2003

The Crucible of the First World War. What the Bolsheviks learned from the «imperialist» war Even before 1914, deep ethnic and social tensions in Russia resulted in violence. Labor militancy, revolutionary terrorism and tsarist anti-revolutionary repression, and, not least, anti-semitic pogroms in the countryside were typical forms of violence. When civil war broke out after the Bolsheviks seized power, violence on the left and the right reached u…
