What Does a Feminist Curiosity Bring to African Military History: An Analysis and an Intervention
This essay uses feminist scholarship to engender African military history. It begins by examining the ways in which gender has—or has not—been integrated into African military history over the last ten years. Next, it analyzes some of the most influential feminist scholarship on gender and militarism in Africa today. Although most of this literature has not been produced by historians, it has much to teach us about how gender can be critically in…
Susanne M. Klausen. Abortion under Apartheid: Nationalism, Sexuality, and Women’s Reproductive Rights in South Africa
Susanne M. Klausen should be commended for writing a book that is compelling, timely, and highly original. Abortion under Apartheid: Nationalism, Sexuality, and Women’s Reproductive Rights in South Africa is the first scholarly history of abortion politics in South Africa (or in Africa, for that matter). More specifically, it is a book about clandestine abortion and the harmful legacies of reproductive injustice. It is also a book about white fem…
Commentary on Tripp's “Comparative perspectives on concepts of gender, ethnicity, and race”
Aili Tripp’s research utilizes a comparative historical framework to analyze why strategies promoting women’s rights, political power, and peace have worked in some contexts but not in others. Much depends on whether a given culture views gender relations in terms of “equality” or “difference.” Those societies which value equality within gender relations tend to emphasize diversity and the importance of identity, particularly in terms of racial a…

Rethinking Everyday Militarism on Campus: Feminist Reflections on the Fatal Shooting at Purdue University
This article uses militarism as a lens through which to examine a fatal shooting that occurred on the campus of Purdue University in January 2014. Although each author experienced the violence differently, as they discuss in their respective sections, they collectively describe a campus enveloped in militarism. And while this militarism did not directly cause the shooting, they suggest that violence is normalized (and even celebrated) on college …

An Accidental Liberation: Ugandan women on the front lines of Idi Amin's economic war
This article considers one of the most curious outcomes of Idi Amin's military dictatorship—the ‘accidental liberation’ of Ugandan women. By expelling the Asian population in late 1972, Amin inadvertently opened up a new economic space for urban women. Whether they were forced to engage in petty trade out of necessity or because they received a shop ‘abandoned’ by the departing Asians, numerous women fondly remembered Amin as the one who ‘taught …
Sometime you may leave your husband in Karuma Falls or in the forest there: A gendered history of disappearance in Idi Amin's Uganda, 1971-79
During Idi Amin's eight-year military dictatorship, agents of the state abducted and "disappeared" countless Ugandan citizens, as well as foreign nationals. Although most of the disappeared were men, disappearance was not simply a masculine phenomenon. This disturbing pattern of violence also had a profound impact on women and their children. In an effort to more fully engender the history of disappearance in Uganda, this article critically exami…
