Off the Derech: Leaving Orthodox Judaism. Edited by Ezra Cappell and Jessica Lang
The publication of Off the Derech: Leaving Orthodox Judaism, an anthology of literary and academic essays on the subject of “exiting” the closed world of ultra-Orthodox Judaism, signals the emergence of a rich subfield in Jewish American literary and cultural studies. The title of the anthology refers to the spiritual, psychological, and spatial journey that formerly ultra-Orthodox Jews undergo, in transition from a bounded world felt as “scripte…
Sid Caesar's Comedy of Excess and the Jewish American 1950s
In this article, I want to situate Caesar's famously unhinged comedic art within and against the Jewish American 1950s – a response to the culture of abundance we associate with the era's embrace of commodification. I'm interested in Caesar's hilarious, biting social satires that focus on the obsessions and absurdities of the new middle class on display in his domestic sketches, first with Imogene Coca on Your Show of Shows (called "The Hickenloo…

EatMor Dairy”: Ben Katchor’s Genealogy of the Dairy Restaurant
For Jews of a certain age who grew up in New York during the tail end of its Jewish gastronomic heyday—in my experience, the late 1950s through the ’70s—and who dream of sizzling potato pirogen and the aroma of gorgeous cheese blintzes surrounded by generous dollops of pillow-smooth sour cream, the graphic artist Ben Katchor’s deeply personal, exhaustively researched cultural history, The Dairy Restaurant, is required reading and viewing.Fans of …

Mapping Jewish American Literary Studies in the New Century
Writing in the Introduction to a now obscure anthology, Jewish-American Literature (1974), its editor Abraham Chapman argued for the importance of Jewish American expression during that transitional moment—the early 1970s—in U.S. cultural and political history. In the wake of the Civil Rights Movement, the winding down of the Viet Nam War, and at the onset of the so-called “ethnic revival” that, later in the decade, would prompt the search for “r…
The Rise of Abraham Cahan
For students of early twentieth-century Jewish American literature and culture, Seth Lipsky’s compact chronicle of the life and times of Abraham Cahan will be of only limited interest. Distilled from a modest range of primary and secondary sources—above all from Cahan’s autobiography, The Education of Abraham Cahan (1969); Ronald Sanders’s still richly evocative The Downtown Jews (1969); and an unpublished 1959 dissertation on Cahan’s life by The…
Safety or Efficiency: Strategies and Conflicting Interests in Belgian Road-Safety Policy, 1920-1940
After World War I, automobile ownership became a mass phenomenon in Belgium, as in most other industrialized countries. Unfortunately, road-casualty figures soon followed. By the mid-1930s, traffic accidents had become the main cause of accidental deaths. There was clearly a need for a renewed road-safety policy. Public authorities in Belgium, however, were suspiciously reluctant to take new measures. While there was a public outcry for more seve…
Geheugenconstructie in mondelinge geschiedenis. De casus van de dronken dokwerker
The construction of memories in oral history. The case of the ‘ drunken docker’. The representation of port workers in our society is dominated by its association with excessive alcohol consumption. In this article we analyze how the positions of the various actors in the narrative process have affected the historical construction of the drunken docker. At a methodological level it is emphasized that oral history is at the same height as other so…
My Puritan Origins
My Puritan Origins Donald Weber (bio) When I heard that Yale University Press was reissuing Sacvan Bercovitch's The Puritan Origins of the American Self (1975) with a substantial new preface, I suggested to Sandra Gustafson that we invite a group of younger scholars in the field to offer some reflections on this canonical work in early American studies, some thirty-six years after it first appeared. I was curious to learn what a new generation of…

Taking Jewish American Popular Culture Seriously: The Yinglish Worlds of Gertrude Berg, Milton Berle, and Mickey Katz

From Limen to Border: A Meditation on the Legacy of Victor Turner for American Cultural Studies
THE FOLLOWING ESSAY ATTEMPTS TO MARK AND ACCOUNT FOR WHAT seems to me a key transition-perhaps displacement is a better term-in recent cultural studies theorizing that has particular relevance for scholars in American studies. I refer specifically to the slippage, or even the virtual disappearance, of the work of symbolic anthropologist Victor Turner as a major methodological influence upon current American studies scholarship. In place of his mo…
