Support among adults for a policy to lower nicotine levels in cigarettes and cigars – USA, 2023
Nicotine is highly addictive and plays a dominant role in sustaining commercial tobacco use. This study assesses support for a policy to lower the nicotine levels in both cigarettes and cigars because reducing nicotine levels to less addictive or non-addictive levels is expected to reduce tobacco use and the resulting tobacco-related disease and death. Data came from SpringStyles 2023, a web panel survey of adults in the USA, aged 18 years or old…
Comparing Family Health Before and After a Family-Focused Nutrition Program during the Pandemic
Participants in the novel home-based vTKO program reported improved family health over 12 weeks
Total and unprotonated (freebase) nicotine content in new types of oral ‘tobacco-free’ nicotine products
Overall, products advertised as higher strength were found to have higher nicotine content than products advertised as lower strength. The measured total nicotine content was either equal to or less than the level stated on the label, except for one product. Although TFN products may not contain tobacco lamina and may lack many harmful chemicals and carcinogens found in conventional smokeless products, freebase nicotine levels in the pouch produc…
Rapid-response surveillance of the first US test market for VLN cigarettes
Retail marketing strategies for VLN mimic those for high-nicotine cigarettes. Deviations from FDA-authorised marketing claims were evident. Surveillance in future test markets is recommended to assess compliance with marketing claims and examine relative price and discount offers. Of interest is how premium-priced, low-nicotine cigarettes stand to compete in a market dominated by cheaper high-nicotine cigarettes
Modelling the impact of menthol sales restrictions and retailer density reduction policies: Insights from tobacco town Minnesota
Our simulations revealed the importance of context, for example, lower income communities in urban areas begin with higher retailer density and may need stronger policies to show impact, as well as the need to focus on differential effects for priority populations, for example, combinations of policies may equalise the average distance travelled to purchase. Adapting and combining policies could enhance the sustainability of policy effects and re…
Differences in price of flavoured and non-flavoured tobacco products sold in the USA, 2011–2016
Trends in the price of tobacco products varied across products and flavour types. Menthol little cigars, moist snuff and RYO were less expensive than non-flavoured varieties. Efforts to make flavoured tobacco products less accessible and less affordable could help reduce tobacco product use
A Long Road to Freedom: The Exoneration Pipeline in the United States, 1989-2015
Research on criminal exoneration, a judicial declaration of innocence post-conviction, has emphasized the demographics of exonerees and the evidentiary bases of exoneration. Few studies have analyzed the temporal gap between conviction and exoneration. Using data from 1,654 exonerees, we estimate a multilevel Cox model, indicating that African Americans are exonerated significantly more slowly than whites. We also show extensive place-based varia…
Evaluating the Continuity of Offending from Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood and its Effect on Academic Failure among College Student Arrestees: A Research Note
Life-course/developmental criminology has generated a significant amount of research in recent years, yet some questions remained unanswered. The current study seeks to fill the gap in the literature by exploring two related research questions: (1) Are there identifiable factors that distinguish offenders who demonstrate continuity in their offending in adolescence and emerging adulthood? (2) Does offending continuity increase the likelihood for …
Developmental trajectories of nonsocial reinforcement and offending in adolescence and young adulthood: An exploratory study of an understudied part of social learning theory
Developmental Trajectories of Maternal and Paternal Attachment and Delinquency in Adolescence
The present study sought to address two research questions: (1) Are there distinct trajectories of maternal and paternal attachment among adolescents? And if so, (2) How do these trajectories of maternal and paternal attachment relate to delinquent trajectories over the ages of 12 to 16? Using a subsample (n = 383) of the longitudinal Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) data, the results from semi-parametric group-based modeling (SPGM)…
Race, Ethnicity, and Experience: Modeling the Public's Perceptions of Justice, Satisfaction, and Attitude Toward the Courts
The purpose of the present study is to examine the influence that race, ethnicity, and experience with the courts has on the interconnection between justice, satisfaction with the courts, and attitudes toward the courts. Using national level polling data, the results show that different forms of justice coalesce into a latent measure of justice. Further, the results show that Blacks are less likely than Whites to see justice in the court system, …
Exploring the Scholarly Output of Academic Organization Leadership in Criminology and Criminal Justice: A Research Note on Publication Productivity
A number of studies analyzing publication productivity of criminology and criminal justice scholars have emerged in recent years. More specifically, this body of literature applies varied cross‐sectional and longitudinal methodological approaches to demonstrate the publication productivity of scholars. Furthermore, these studies often diverge in their operationalization of the key construct of interest (publication productivity); however, one rel…
A Conversation About the Clinical Scholars Program: The Training of Nonbiomedical Fellows Inside the Modern Academic Medical Center
Background: The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program is arguably the best example of "action research" in postgraduate medical education conducted in the second half of the twentieth century. Since its inception in the late 1960s, the program has sought to improve the sensitivity of medical care to its constituents by producing a new kind of physician-one with the skills to rigorously assess the societal forces that impact health care an…
