Redemption from Tyranny: Herman Husband's American Revolution
Herman Husband was born in 1724; his father and his grandfather before him had become prominent Maryland landowners and enslavers. He died in 1795, trying to ride home from Philadelphia to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, after imprisonment during a failed effort to convict him of sedition against the New Republic. Husband led a remarkable life. After an early career working for his father and then utilizing Quaker connections to enter the trade cir…

A Revolution in Eating: How the Quest for Food Shaped America
James E. McWilliams's goal in A Revolution in Eating is to discover not just what colonial Americans ate, but why they ate what they did. He hopes to recover a story that will inspire people who today want a food culture distinguished by “sustainability, slow food, and greater intimacy with what we eat” (p. 5). In style and substance the book is aimed at both scholars and the general public, as the dust jacket blurbs—one from the vice president o…
Before Cotton and Other than Sugar: How Tobacco and Rice Shaped the World of Eighteenth-Century Slaves in British North America
About halfway through Philip D. Morgan's lengthy, comparative study of slavery in the eighteenth-century Lowcountry and Chesapeake, the author recounts David George's testimony of the violence inflicted on his family as slaves in Surry County Virginia: After he [George's brother] had received 500 lashes or more [for running away], they washed his back with salt water, and whipped it in, as well as rubbed it with a rag, and then directly sent him …

The World of Maurice Thomson
Who was Maurice Thomson? Arguably the most significant English colonial merchant of the early seventeenth century, Thomson plays no part in such pioneering accounts of the commercial development of England's Atlantic empire as Wesley Frank Craven's The Southern Colonies in the Seventeenth Century, 1607-1689 (1949) or Bernard Bailyn's New England Merchants in the Seventeenth Century (1955).1 Thomson apparently left no diary, account books, or othe…

A Revolution of Scale in Overseas Trade: British Firms in the Chesapeake Trade, 1675-1775
In seventeenth-century England the relatively open trades to America attracted ventures by hundreds of small merchants and shopkeepers. This ease of entry was checked after 1685 by very high customs duties on tobacco and intense regulation. Between 1685 and 1775 the number of firms in that trade was radically reduced and the size of the average firm increased ten to thirtyfold. Comparable if less extreme trends can be detected in the sugar, slave…
