Theoretical analysis of the “balance of power”
The structure of a “balance of power” system can be explored with the aid of models, but for practical and theoretical reasons, the theorist often has difficulty in displaying all the implications of his model. In an effort to bring out and examine the stabilizing qualities and other potentialities attributed to the “balance of power” system, the authors of this article have invented a competitive game of international politics—not as itself a mo…
The Predictability of Stock Returns: A Cross-Sectional Simulation
This paper investigates whether predictable patterns that previous empirical work in finance have isolated appear to be persistent and exploitable by portfolio managers. On a sample that is free from survivorship bias we construct a test wherein we simulate the purchases and sales an investor would undertake to exploit the predictable patterns, charging the appropriate transaction costs for buying and selling and using only publicly available inf…
Endogenous Output in an Aggregate Model of the Labor Market
A common feature to most aggregative studies of the labor market is a marginal productivity expression in which the quantity of labor appears on the left hand side of the equation, and the right hand side includes the real wage and output. A number of researchers have cautioned that if the output variable is treated as exogenous, serious econometric difficulties may result. However, the assumption that output is exogenous has not been tested. In …
The Conflict between Equilibrium and Disequilibrium Theories: The Case of the U.S. Labor Market
a nonprofit research organization, was established on July 1, 1945.It is an activity of the W. E. Upjohn Unemployment Trustee Corpora tion, which was formed in 1932 to administer a fund set aside by the late Dr. W. E
Efficiency and Profitability in Exotic Bets
The efficiency and profitability of exotic racetrack bets such as exactas and daily doubles are examined. Efficiency is understood to mean that above average returns cannot be made in the long run once risk is appropriately controlled for. The markets in question are found not to be efficient; the inefficiencies, however, are insufficient to permit simple strategies to show a consistent profit. Some evidence of "smart money" exists in that holder…
Switching Between Equilibrium and Disequilibrium
A Model of Rationing and Labour Supply: Theory and Estimation
A number of authors, most prominently Clower (1965) and Leijonhofvud (1968), have interpreted Keynes's theory of unemployment as a model. Nominal price and wage rigidity prevent the labour market from clearing. The actual level of employment is given by the minimum of the effective demand for labour and the effective supply. General disequilibrium models of income and employment determination have been developed by Barro and Grossman (1976) and M…
A Model of FHLBB Advances: Rationing or Market Clearing
THE Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB), a government regulatory agency for member Savings and Loan Associations (SLA), provides advance loans (advances) to members. Advances are considered a major policy tool for the FHLBB in stabilizing deposit, mortgage, and housing markets. Indeed, the FHLBB has characterized advances as providing 'a central credit resource, capable of expanding and contracting to meet the needs of its member institutions fo…
Estimation of a Disequilibrium Aggregate Labor Market
AN important question in contemporary 1AILeconomics is whether or not the real wage clears the labor market. Its answer has bearing on issues as diverse as the nature of unemployment, the efficacy of fiscal and monetary policies, and the incidence of income taxes. Unfortunately, consensus as to the correct answer seems to be lacking. While much of modern macroeconomic theory allows for the possibility that the real wage fails to equate the supply…
Studies in Nonlinear Estimation
Some Quantitative Aspects of the Economics Journal Literature
The paper investigates various aspects of citation practices on the basis of all citations appearing in full volumes of eight principal journals at 10-year intervals. The growth of the number of citations is in good agreement with the findings for other fields, and the mean age of citations declines over time by about 6 months per decade. Most journal articles have a significant tendency to cite other articles published in the same journal, and t…

On the Use of Game Models in Theories of International Relations
Among all the social sciences, the art of model building is perhaps best developed in economics.Models or theories are conceptualizations of and abstractions from reality; they rely intrinsically on ldquo;if-thenrdquo;statements and should lead to testable propositions if they are to be of any use at all.It would be difficult to give a brief description of all the important characteristics of economic models, for there are numerous types, designe…
