  • The Creation of Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era

    Open Access•Robert Weinberg•ARTICLE•Religions•2025

This article examines the creation of Dr. John E. Esslemont's seminal work Bahá'u'lláh and the New Era (1923), the first comprehensive introductory book in English on the Bahá'í Faith. Drawing particularly on the extensive correspondence between Esslemont and Luṭfu'lláh Ḥakím, the article traces Esslemont's journey from his initial encounter with the Bahá'í teachings in 1914 to the book's publication and subsequent global impact. The unique invol…

  • A structured curriculum supporting biomedical trainees’ transition into independent academic positions and early career success

    Open Access•Mabel Perez-Oquendo, Lois H Gresh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Education•2024

The United States government makes a substantial investment in biomedical training programs each year. However, for most trainees, these opportunities do not translate into career progression in academic research pathways. Only about one-fifth of postdoctoral fellows eventually secure a tenure-track faculty position, and even among these candidates, attrition is high. Although a number of factors govern career choices and career longevity, the tr…

  • The History of Birobidzhan

Gennady Estraikh, Edyta Bojanowska et al.•BOOK•The History of Birobidzhan•2023

Gennady Estraikh’s book is the first to explore the birth, growth, demise and afterlife of the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The History of Birobidzhan looks at how the shtetl was widely used in Soviet propaganda as a perfect solution to the ‘Jewish question’, arguing that in reality, while being demographically and culturally insignificant, the JAR played a key, and essentially detrimental, role in determining Jewish rights and ent…

Although elite sport has provided an ideal context for exploring mental toughness (MT), currently, there is scant research examining how this construct might be equally applicable in exercise settings, where high rates of attrition have been reported. The present research, therefore, aimed to address this gap, and to understand and conceptualise exercise mental toughness (EMT) through in-depth phenomenological interviews with a range of exercise …

    Open Access•Robert Weinberg•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•2008•References: 12

In this article, Robert Weinberg explores the visual representation of Judaism and observant Jews in the Soviet journalBezbozhnik u stanka(The atheist at the workbench), which appeared in the 1920s. In their efforts to promote atheism and undermine organized religion, the artists responsible for the images in this journal singled out the Jewish god to be depicted with inhuman, bestial, and bizarre features such as a single eye and a nose made out…

We' first discussed the idea of this Festschrift one summer afternoon in the late 1980s when our paths crossed in Berkeley. Sitting over beers at Kips commiserating about the quality of life outside the Bay Area, we began to elaborate on our good fortune in having studied with Reggie. We have found our own ways as sc…

Recent scholarship on the purges and Great Terror has contributed immensely to our understanding of the Stalinist political system that emerged in the mid-1980s. Research by J. Arch Getty and Gabor Rittersporn, among others, has challenged the totalitarian perspective that views the Terror as part of a grand scheme designed by Stalin to silence his opponents in the Party and government, establish his personal dictatorship and coerce society into …

    Open Access•Robert Weinberg•ARTICLE•Slavic Review•1990•References: 1

One remarkable feature of the 1905 Russian Revolution was the efflorescence of labor organizations that occurred throughout the urban regions of the empire. Many workers throughout the empire demonstrated their resolve to promote and defend their interests in an organized and rational manner, with the mass labor movement often cutting across craft and occupational divisions to bring all kinds of workers into joint economic and political action ag…

  • The effects of gender on assessment centre evaluations

Open Access•James P Walsh, Robert Weinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1987

Assessment centre evaluations of candidates were analysed for evidence of assessor‐assessee sex effects. Results from this investigation revealed a significant main effect for assessee sex, favouring females over males, and a significant interaction effect between the sex composition of the assessor group and assessee sex. These results are compared with past empirical evidence and discussed in the light of current theory

  • Workers, Pogroms, and the 1905 Revolution in Odessa

    Robert Weinberg•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1987•Cited by: 2

The wave of anti-Jewish pogroms that swept the Pale of Settlement after the issuance of the October Manifesto in 1905 reflected the tensions and emotions that characterized popular unrest in that revolutionary year. In the two weeks following the tsar's granting of fundamental civil rights and political liberties, pogroms, directed mainly at Jews, broke out in hundreds of cities, towns, and villages, resulting in deaths and injuries to thousands …
