  • Kafka’s Literary Style

Open Access•Carsten Strathausen, Wenyi Shang et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities•2025

In this essay, we examine how the polyvalence of meaning in Kafka’s texts is engineered both semantically (on the narrative level) and syntactically (on the linguistic level), and we ask whether a computational approach can shed new light on the long-standing debate about the major characteristics of Kafka’s literary style. A mixed-method approach means that we seek out points of connection that interlink traditional humanist (i.e., interpretativ…

  • Adapting Kafka

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•Word & Image•2024

This essay examines the metamorphic nature of Franz Kafka’s writing. I focus in particular on the unpublished manuscripts Kafka left behind, which reveal the structural instability of his texts and the stories they tell. These stories were malleable and adaptive, meaning they changed depending on the writing environment and the materials Kafka used to compose his texts. Max Brod’s influential edition of Kafka’s manuscripts, however, literally era…

  • Kafka’s Drawings

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2024

Introducing Kafka (1993), "has been so widely over-interpreted and pigeon-holed" as Kafka. 1 The claim is hardly new.Back in 1944, Hannah Arendt was the first to highlight the massive amount of "misleading" scholarship published on Kafka. 2 Two decades later, Susan Sontag lamented that Kafka's oeuvre had been "subjected to a mass ravishment by [multiple] armies of interpreters

  • Geheimes Deutschland

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•Telos•2016

I This essay examines the poetic and political aspirations of Stefan George and his circle.1 I focus in particular on “the secret Germany” (das geheime Deutschland) that the George Circle claimed both to inaugurate and to embody as a whole. Indeed, this emphasis on physical embodiment, on the poetic Gestalt of true life as opposed to its reified manifestation in modern bourgeois society, will be a central theme throughout my reflections. The expr…

  • Myth or Knowledge? Reading Carl Schmitt's Hamlet or Hecuba

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•Telos•2010•Cited by: 3

Carl Schmitt's Hamlet or Hecuba (1956) is a peculiar text. For one, it stands out as the only detailed interpretation of a literary work that Schmitt ever produced. This is not to deny Schmitt's overall erudition and familiarity with Western literature nor his particular interest in the intricate relationship between aesthetics and politics, all of which can be traced throughout his writings from the 1910s to the 1950s. But the fact remains that …

  • A Critique of Neo-Left Ontology

    Open Access•Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•Postmodern Culture•2006

A Critique of Neo-Left Ontology Carsten Strathausen Abstract This essay investigates why "ontology" has become an increasingly important topic for a number of contemporary political philosophers. It is divided into two parts, the first of which contrasts what it calls "neo-left" thinkers with more traditionally minded Marxists (such as Theodor Adorno and Fredric Jameson), focusing in particular on their different understanding of the meaning of "…

  • Of Circles and Riddles

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•2003

I Let me begin with a look: that is, with a look at a particular photograph. Dated October 1895, it depicts almost intact locomotive that smashed through the glass facade of the Gare Montparnasse in Paris and crashed onto the street below. A rather curious event, to say the least, the accident prompted headlines in the daily newspaper Le Figaro which reported that the train was running at full throttle when it arrived at the station. Unable to ac…

  • The Return of the Gaze

    Carsten Strathausen•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2000

Having just recently passed away at the age of one-hundred-and-one, Ernst Jiinger was truly a witness to the twentieth century. Given his official recognition as a major literary figure throughout Europe (wellwishers for his hundreth birthday in 1995 included former French President Mitterand and German Chancellor Kohl), Jiinger's work has sparked a renewed debate among literary scholars that often focuses on his personal contribution to proto-fa…
