  • Hammer of the gods

Shane Hawkins, Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Metal Music Studies•2024

This article explores metal music’s lyrical and aesthetic reception of the Norse mythological hero Thor, both as a tragi-comic figure evoking humour and pathos and as a mythological figure that lends itself to poses that incorporate outsider tropes. The anti-establishment and anti-conformist attitudes of metal music are freely adopted by Viking metal but surface in a unique stance against the Christianization of space deemed Pagan along with the …

  • Eastern Sages in Roman Egypt

    Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Studies in Late Antiquity•2023

Scholars have long been curious about the transmission of religious and philosophical ideas across Eurasia in antiquity. It is well known that Mani named a number of important figures from “Eastern” religious traditions—such as Buddha and Zoroaster—among his list of prophetic forerunners in an effort to establish his own authority as a religious teacher. Recently published portions of the Dublin codex of the Manichaean Kephalaia provide an additi…

  • Manichaeism and the Revelation of the Magi

    Open Access•Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Hugoye Journal of Syriac Studies•2021

The recently published Syriac Revelation of the Magi has proven to be a remarkable addition to the corpus of early Christian apocryphal literature. This unique amplification of the traditional Nativity narrative recounts the Magi’s encounter with a “star-child” who leads them from their homeland in the far east to the birth of Jesus at Nazareth, where the polymorphic nature of Christ is revealed along with his message of universal salvation. Inte…

  • Rediscovering the Apocryphal Continent

Pierluigi Piovanelli, Tony Burke et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Rediscovering the Apocryphal…•2015

This volume collects the contributions of a group of North American scholars who started rethinking, in 2004, the traditional category of New Testament Apocrypha, largely dominated by theological concerns, according to the new perspectives of a greater continuity not only between Second Temple Jewish and early Christian scriptural productions, but also between early Christian and late antique apocryphal literatures. This is the result of the conf…

  • Many Faced Gods

    Open Access•Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Open Theology•2015

This paper gathers together evidence that the Manichaean cosmogony was originally based on a trinitarian structure (Father, Mother, Child). This basic triad was subsequently expanded into various hypostases as the Manichaean myth evolved over time and across linguistic contexts

  • From Cybele to Christ

    Open Access•Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2008•References: 11

In light of the current appetite for early Christianity in popular discourse, this paper examines the rise of Christianity within the transformative context of late-Roman religious culture. Rather than viewing Christianity as an isolated and unique catalyst for religious change, this paper reminds readers that early Christianity was in fact part of a much broader process that saw a steady increase in the influence of eastern religious cultures th…

  • The Faces of the Father

    Timothy Pettipiece•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•2007

One of the most striking characteristics of the first volume of Manichaean Kephalaia is the occurrence of five-part patterns in a wide variety of contexts. Even though the importance of pentads in Manichaeism has long been recognized, few attempts have been made to study what implications they might have for tracing the development of early Manichaean tradition. By examining the attribution of five qualities to the Father of Greatness in Kephalai…
