  • Autistic injustice as affective injustice

    Open Access•Kris Goffin•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2026

In this paper, I argue that autistic individuals experience a specific kind of injustice: autistic injustice. I will argue that this form of injustice is closely tied to emotional norms, which are the standards dictating, for instance, how emotions should be expressed appropriately and which emotions are deemed suitable in particular contexts. I will build on Damian Milton’s (2012) concept of the “Double Empathy Problem,” which challenges the tra…

  • Don’t go reading my emotions

    Open Access•Kris Goffin, Alex Archer•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2025

Some AI applications are programmed to recognize people’s emotions. These can be used to help or teach people to recognize and interpret the emotions of others, as well as to monitor the performance of customer service workers. Some commentators have identified several risks with these technologies, while others highlight the positive effects of affective AI. It can, for instance, serve as a form of affective and cognitive scaffolding that helps …

  • Chatbot-fictionalism and empathetic AI

    Open Access•Sarah Friend, Kris Goffin•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2025

We focus on recent proposals to interpret interactions with empathetic AI systems as games of make-believe, analogous to our engagement with fictions. Chatbots are increasingly designed to detect and emulate emotional nuance, resembling real human interactions. These applications have raised ethical concerns. Critics focus on the potentially harmful effects of people’s tendency to anthropomorphize the chatbots – to respond to them as if they were…

  • The linguistic fallacy & the complex content of emotion

    Kris Goffin•ARTICLE•Philosophical Psychology•2024

Some argue that emotions represent so-called core relational themes. A core relational theme describes a relation between a particular event and an organism’s well-being. For instance, the core relational theme of anger is ‘a demeaning offense against me and mine’. I argue that a core relational theme is a summary or generalization of a more complex mental content. Defenders of the Simple Core Relational Theme View reject the idea that emotional …

  • Emotions in time

    Open Access•Kris Goffin, Gerardo Viera•ARTICLE•Mind & Language•2024

According to componential theories of emotional experience, emotional experiences are phenomenally complex in that they consist of experiential parts, which may include cognitive appraisals, bodily feelings, and action tendencies. These componential theories face the problem of emotional unity: Despite their complexity, emotional experiences also seem to be phenomenologically unified. Componential theories have to give an account of this unity. W…

The Congolese art collection of the city of Antwerp celebrated its 100th birthday in 2020. 100 × Congo displays 100 Congolese artworks of this collection. The curators are Els De Palmenaer (Keeper of the Africa collection of the MAS) and Nadia Nsayi (political scientist and Congo-expert). As I will discuss the importance of being transparent about one’s epistemic perspectives, I believe it is appropriate to mention that I am a white man who grew …
