Geriatric Assessment in Oncology
This review summarizes the evolution of recommendations for geriatric assessment (GA), the randomized evidence underpinning GA‐guided management (GAM), and current implementation challenges in Japan. From the combined perspectives of oncology and geriatric medicine, we discuss how GA relates to comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), and argue that GA is best understood as an oncology‐adapted extension of CGA. Recent trials show that active, mu…

Face‐Looking as a Real‐Time Process in Mind‐Mindedness
Maternal mind‐mindedness refers to a caregiver's tendency to respond to their infants as individuals with their own thoughts, feelings, desires, and beliefs. Although previous studies have focused on maternal speech in quantifying mind‐mindedness, maternal mind‐mindedness should manifest not only as mind‐related comments but also through non‐verbal behaviors during infant‐mother interactions. In this study, we investigated the relationship betwee…
The Tokunoshima Belt
The latest geological and geotectonic aspects of Tokunoshima Island in Central Ryukyus are reviewed. The pre-Quaternary basement geology of the island is two-fold; i.e., the Cretaceous accretionary complex (Amagidake and Omo units) and the high-grade metamorphic unit newly named the Inokawadake metamorphic complex (IMC). The former is correlated with the northern subbelt of the Shimanto belt in SW Japan. The IMC is composed of high-grade metamorp…

Third-party punishment by preverbal infants
Third-party punishment of antisocial others is unique to humans and seems to be universal across cultures. However, its emergence in ontogeny remains unknown. We developed a participatory cognitive paradigm using gaze-contingency techniques, in which infants can use their gaze to affect agents displayed on a monitor. In this paradigm, fixation on an agent triggers the event of a stone crushing the agent. Throughout five experiments (total N = 120…
Association between synesthetic colors and sensitivity to physical colors changed by type of synesthetic experience in grapheme-color synesthesia
Socially engaged art in postcolonial Japan
This study proposes an alternative view of contemporary Japanese art, which goes against the generally accepted discourse that it characteristically lacks a political edge. It examines how ‘socially engaged art’ practices of Japanese artists have tackled ‘postcolonial’ issues in Japan since the 1990s. Firstly, I analyse Japan's complicated postcolonial status to understand the nature of legacies of Japanese colonialism, which remained almost inta…
Multilevel analysis of individual differences in regularities of grapheme–color associations in synesthesia
Plasma amino acid profiles in healthy East Asian subpopulations living in Japan
OBJECTIVES: Profiles of plasma free amino acids (PFAAs) have been utilized as biomarkers to detect various diseases. However, few studies have investigated whether ethnicity or specific subpopulations within East Asia influence PFAA concentrations. METHODS: A total of 95 healthy volunteers living in Japan, including 31 Japanese individuals, 36 Korean individuals and 28 Chinese individuals, were enrolled. Participants' PFAA levels were measured by…

De-N-glycosylation or G82S mutation of Rage sensitizes its interaction with advanced glycation endproducts
Interactions between advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) and the receptor for AGE (RAGE) have been implicated in the development of diabetic vascular complications. RAGE has two N-glycosylation sites in and near the AGE-binding domain, and G82S mutation in the second N-glycosylation motif was recently reported in human. In this study, we examined whether de-N-glycosylation or G82S of RAGE affect its ability to bind AGE and cellular response to A…
Evaluation of Human Health Risks From Exposures to Four Air Pollutants in the Indoor and the Outdoor Environments in Tokushima, and Communication of the Outcomes to the Local People
The Law concerning Reporting etc., of Releases to the Environment of Specific Chemical Substances, and Promoting Improvement in Their Management (the so‐called Pollutant Release and Transfer Register Law or the PRTR Law) was promulgated in Japan in 1999. Estimated amounts of the specific chemical substances released from their major emission sources to local environments are publicly available by law. Concentrations of benzene, toluene, xylene (i…
